Video of the Week: Shirley Bassey’s There’s No Place Like London

We love this piece of retro nuttiness from Shirley Bassey. She sings! She dances! She kisses horses on the mouth!

Back in 1982, Bassey made a promo video for the Tourist Board, and here’s the result.

Check out the cameos by Kermit the Frog, Frank Bruno and Michael Caine. Can you spot long-lost London landmarks Concorde and Cats? And isn’t it weird seeing a vid of London without the Eye, the Gherkin and Canary Wharf?

Bonus Friday points for spotting one London show that spans the decades…

Fantastic – I hope they reprise this for the 2012 Olympics!

  2. Glen says:

The title says it all. There is NO place like London. One amazing city.

  3. Becca says:

Was this created by visit london?

    • Zoe J. Griffiths says:

No, it’s older than Visit London! In 1982, I think the company looking after tourists was just called The Tourist Board.

  4. Becca says:

Oh ok, thanks! Zoe do you work for Visit London? If you do would it be possible to email you/someone some questions about the companies advertisements? I am at Nottingham Trent University and am doing my dissertation on representations of London so would be really grateful if you could help me out? Thanks.
