Last week was British Sandwich Week, a country-wide celebration of that staple of the British diet.
British Sandwich Week featured the 2010 Sammies – the British Sandwich Association‘s awards for the best sandwiches in the UK, in a number of different categories.
Two London retailers received Highly Commended gongs in the Best Independent Sandwich Bar section:
- Reynolds in Mayfair
- Fernandez & Wells in Soho (they’ve got two branches: a Fernandez & Wells Café in Beak Street and the Fernandez & Wells Food & Wine bar in Lexington Street)
So, in true Sammies spirit, this week Visit London would like you to name your favourite sandwich (and/or sandwich bar) in London.
Ate in Thanks for Franks off Carnaby Street on Saturday, and had a pretty amazing roasted salmon and salad on a gorgeous granary roll. Yum
There are some lovely sandwiches to be had at Borough Market, like salt beef.
For best named sandwich, the prize has to go to my local Japanese (Sapporo Ichiban in Catford) which offers ‘Fashion Sandwiches’, whatever they are!
Oh, I think it’s called Piggy’s on Air Street, between Piccadilly and Regent Streets, right near Piccadilly Circus.
Nice staff, great selection of fresh, tasty and healthy sandwiches, with an Italian feel. The crab and avocado is my favourite!
Although for bagels, it has to be Brick Lane…
