Visit London Asks: Are You A Volunteer?

Firstly, a big thank you to everyone who responded to last week’s question with some fantastic vegetarian restaurant recommendations.

Today marks the beginning of Volunteers Week, an annual event to celebrate the wonderful contribution that millions of volunteers make across the UK.

Apparently around 70% of adults in the UK volunteered in the past year.  That spirit will serve the country well with the London 2012 Olympics around the corner.

The 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games will need  loads of you to help out so things run smoothly. Find out how to volunteer for the 2012 Olympics here.

Are you a volunteer? Visit London wants to know how, why, where and what you’ve volunteered for recently.

Just recently finished 2 stints of volunteering through a company called Global Vision International, http://www.gvi.co.uk, in Borneo and Java. I have to say it didn’t feel like volunteering in the traditional sense of the word as it wasn’t a selfless exercise – it was amazing! Initially we joined a group of 7 others, staying with local families in Malaysian Borneo, focused on forest restoration and developing eco-tourism. We cleared parts of the forest which had previously been logged, then planted new native trees; we planted reed beds, cleared eco-trails in the forest, repaired their pontoon, removed weeds from the lake, and did general maintenance around the village. My partner and I also designed and built the local charity a new website. I can’t recommend this kind of ‘holiday’ enough, it’s the most rewarding thing I’ve done in ages!
