I have to say it didn’t feel like volunteering in the traditional sense of the word as it wasn’t a selfless exercise – it was amazing! Initially we joined a group of 7 others, staying with local families in Malaysian Borneo, focused on forest restoration and developing eco-tourism. We cleared parts of the forest which had previously been logged, then planted new native trees; we planted reed beds, cleared eco-trails in the forest, repaired their pontoon, removed weeds from the lake, and did general maintenance around the village. My partner and I also designed and built the local charity a new website. I can’t recommend this kind of ‘holiday’ enough, it’s the most rewarding thing I’ve done in ages!
