I visited this sauna recently for the first time. After much googling, I found a trusted place where I could make a private booking. I'm not used to visiting saunas and don't like the idea of communal sharing, so this was ideal. It was great having the sauna to myself and having compete privacy. Hope to visit this sauna again very soon.

You make a good point, Julie. The traditional sauna if of course heated by burning wood, but that's something you normally have to compromise in an urban environment. The same, unfortunately, goes for the birch twigs exercise.

All in all, I'm following the simple dogma that if there's enough of löyly in the sauna then it's a real sauna. Appearance is secondary.

Here's a good introduction on different types of saunas:

Just googled my mother's maiden name--Markkanen. Found this.
Grandfather emigrated (stowed away) to US in late 1800s.
And, from what I remember of my youth (in the NW USA), this is not a real sauna without rocks over a wood burning 'stove' (to throw the water on, make steam) and birch branches handy.
