Turkey in London: Green Lanes, Harringay

For our World in London blog post for Turkey, I spent a sunny Friday afternoon creating a photographic essay of Green Lanes in Harringay, a heavily Turkish-influenced area in North London. (Harringay is a locality in the borough of Haringey).

From restaurants serving up lamachun, pide and kebabs, to travel agents, to supermarkets, to Turkish barbers, Green Lanes is a lively mix of Turkish treats (you’ll also find plenty of Greek and Polish shops, a Bulgarian restaurant and a Somalian cafe!)

You can see these photos and more, plus add your own to Visit London’s flickrpool.

And please tell us about about anything Turkish in London, in Green Lanes or elsewhere, you’ve come across in the comments below.

  1. Lettice says:

I love going to Tas restaurants!

  2. Jeremy Seymour says:

For some reason only the shops are Turkish. The resident Turkish population is very small.

    • Claire Doble says:

I wonder where they all moved to?

      • Jeremy Seymour says:

They never moved in. The Greek Cypriot population that moved in in the Sixties moved up to Palmers Green and beyond from the late eighties on. They had both lived here and owned businesses here. The Turkish Cypriots followed them into the commercial premises they vacated on Green Lanes, but have not settled locally in great numbers. Perhaps by this point properties had become too expensive?

(By the way Harringay Green Lanes is ONLY the name of a railway station – used to distinguish it from Harringay Station to the west. The area is Harringay; the street is Green Lanes. So you were in Harringay or Green Lanes, Harringay, not Harringay Green Lanes.)

    • Claire Doble says:

Thanks again – you obviously have the knowledge! : )

    • Claire Doble says:

Sure, done. Any other tips for our readers on the Turkish community in London?

  3. Jenny says:

Any tips on where to get fresh baklava in London?

    • Lauren says:

Antepilier for sure and also Yasir Halim for absolutely anything sweet and pastry-like, as well as for delicious bread!

  4. Sue says:

Antepilier in Green Lanes is the very best place to get baklava. Enjoy!
