It was announced today that Olympic Park will be named the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in honour of the British monarch, who celebrates her Diamond Jubilee in 2012.

Olympic Park will be the main hub for London 2012 Olympic and Paralypic Games sports and activities, including the opening and closing ceremonies of both games fortnights.

The name will take effect when the park reopens in 2013 after the Olympics and Paralympics are finished.

“Her Majesty has been supporting of London 2012 from the start and with the event taking place in her Diamond Jubilee year, it is fitting that the Park bears her name,” says Colin Moynihan, the chairman of the British Olympic Association (BOA).
