The triathlon course for the London 2012 Olympics will be tested in August next year, when London stages the penultimate race in the Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series.

London will once again hold one of the seven races in the ITU World Championship Series in 2011, according to And this year, there’ll be the added excitement that competitors will be using the same course as the 2012 Olympians.

The event will be as follows:

  • Swim a 1500m lap of the Serpentine, departing from a pontoon on the north side of the lake
  • Cycle seven laps, or 40km, in and out of Hyde Park
  • Run four laps, or 10km around Hyde Park

The cycle route will exit at Hyde Park Corner before going down Constitution Hill, past Buckingham Palace and back into the park.

This will mark the first time a triathlon has been held in the centre of the host city since the event made its debut in the Sydney 2000 Olympics.

“As we move closer to the 2012 Olympic Games, ITU (International¬†Triathlon Union)¬†is pleased to offer a world-class series that showcases our extraordinary athletes in some truly spectacular cities,” said Marisol Casado, the ITU President.

“2010 was a phenomenal year for triathlon and we’re excited to build on that momentum to propel us to another wonderful season in 2011.”
