Visit London Asks: What’s Your Favourite Place in London to Hear Music?

Following last week’s announcement that The O2 is the world’s most popular music venue, we asked our Visit London Facebook fans What’s Your Favourite Place in London To Hear Music?

There was a big response. Plenty of you agree The O2 is excellent, and other large venues such as HMV Hammersmith Apollo, Royal Albert Hall, The Roundhouse and The Barbican were mentioned.

Smaller venue favourites include Ronnie Scott’s in Soho, Camden’s Electric Ballroom, Vortex Jazz Club in Hackney, Union Chapel Islington and The Archduke at Waterloo.

Lots of people rate London’s buskers, music outdoors in Covent Garden, Regent’s Park (in summer!) and Trafalgar Square, and several of you professed a love for candlelit concerts at St Martin in the Fields.

I love going to the Royal Albert Hall. No matter how many times I go there, it always feels really special; I guess cos I’ve seen so many times on TV! The Brixton Academy is another great venue. Totally different to the RAH, but again, whenever I’ve been, I’ve had a great time.

  2. Yes, Love them all, but nothing beats a live band in a pub for me!

  3. LazyLondon says:

I like the Brixton Academy too. The O2 is good for arena gigs – like Arcade Fire in December – although a bit of a pain to get home from. KOKO’s pretty good for smaller gigs.

  4. Edd says:

The RAH is certainly impressive – but mine would have to be Brixton (or Carling) Academy, simply due to the bands and events they have on there. Although I would really love to see The Prodigy at the Royal Albert Hall! :)

  5. SouthLondoner says:

I like Hootananny in Brixton, always has a great mix of bands on – and is free! Royal Festival Hall and the National Theatre are also good for free stuff. The Barbican and Southbank Centre always have an amazing line-up, though some groups can get lost in the big space – and you can’t dance!

  6. Steve Pugh says:

The Betsy Trotwood in Clerkenwell. Small pub with two small performance spaces (one upstairs, one in the basement) – had some great times in both with friends playing.

  7. The O2 Arena may be the world’s most popular venue, but I would rather watch a gig at its smaller sister the Indig02 any day of the week.
