Oasis at Wembley

Ray Jones reports. Thunder clouds threatened but the music held the weather back. Oasis took to the stage at Wembley yesterday evening after a rousing set by Kasabian. No fancy footwork, just a series of glorious rock anthems performed to perfection to an adoring packed house. ”Any Scousers in the house” drew laughter and boos – “Any cockneys in the house” raised a roar fit for the Place of Champions.

Wembley Stadium is a great place to see a gig. My seats were towards the rear but the sound was crisp and loud.

I travelled out from Central London by Chiltern Trains from Marylebone. It only took a matter of minutes. Positively the best way to get to Wembley while the Jubilee Line tortures us with weekend closures.

My wife and eight-year-old son met me there, having travelled by car. Parking was easy (but did cost £20) and traffic flowed easily after the show.

Its £4 a pint at Wembley and a burger might cost more than Mc D’s but I am giving this whole day one big thumbs up.

Oasis are no longer the bad boys of rock, but last night they certainly rocked Wembley Stadium.

Jackets off at Henley

If you are heading for the Henley Royal Regatta, rest easy. Apparently the Henley Stewards have just allowed male members and guests in the Stewards Enclosure to remove their jackets and blazers due to the heat – this is the first time it’s happened since 1976!

Good luck to team IMD Cowell and ID Edmondson of London Rowing Club who are competing in the Silver Goblets & Nickalls’ Challenge Cup tomorrow. ID Edmondson is Visit London’s very own senior projects manager. He’ll be up against GB international Olympic gold medallists on Friday – if he qualifies that is.

Let us know if you have friends or colleagues competing in any of the London sporting events over the summer.

London will miss the king of pop

Statement issued by hospital:

â€˜The legendary King of Pop, Michael Jackson, passed away on Thursday, June 25, 2009, at 2:26 pm (Los Angeles time). It is believed he suffered cardiac arrest in his home. However, the cause of his death is unknown until results of the autopsy are known.

His personal physician, who was with him at the time, attempted to resuscitate Jackson, as did paramedics who transported him to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Centre. Upon arriving at the hospital at approximately 1:14 pm, a team of doctors, including emergency physicians and cardiologists, attempted to resuscitate him for a period of more than one hour but were unsuccessful.’

All of us at Visit London are very sad to hear this news and send our deepest sympathy to Michael’s family at this time.

I have been a life-long Michael Jackson fan (we’re about the same age and I immediately fell in love with the kid with the amazing voice and dance moves in 1969) and was looking forward to his performances at the O2. I hope that the controversy which has surrounded his life in recent years will not be remembered. Rather, we remember his genius as a popular entertainer and his appeal to so many people. I am sat in the office opposite a very bright 16 year old student here on work experience. Both of us are equally touched by Michael Jackson’s brilliant music.

I’m now going to put Michael Jackson music on for the rest of the day. And do some work of course!
