London’s Top 10 Independent Bookshops

Shopping for books in London is a perfect way to pass the time. Here are some of our favourite independent bookshops in London – they’re ideal for Christmas presents!

1. Foyles
Famous Foyles is a sprawling department store with books on every subject. There are four floors of books to choose from and a café to contemplate your books. You’ll even spot a few well chosen second-hand books nestling between the new ones to give you a comprehensive choice.

2. Grant & Cutler
Specialising in foreign language books (in more than 150 languages), Grant & Cutler is the place to go if you’re learning a new language or missing books in your first language. Grant & Cutler stock international classics for students, the latest blockbusters from around the world and any educational language material you might ever decide you need.

3. Daunt Books
Daunt Books in Marylebone High Street is a very satisfying place to buy books. The old-fashioned wood panelling and balconies seem to saturate the books with wisdom and gravitas. Daunt have a large selection of travel books and they sensibly place guidebooks, novels and travel diaries together by country.

4. My Back Pages
My Back Pages in Balham is stuffed with second-hand books. You can lose hours in this shop, get cramp from prolonged rummaging through boxes or unexpectedly clamber over some books and discover another customer sitting on the floor dreamily building a book castle of their potential purchases. If you leave My Back Pages without armfuls of books, you’re doing it wrong.

5. RD Franks
RD Franks stocks the most attractive books in town. Specialising in books and magazines about fashion and textiles, you’ll find imported and specialist glossy mags predicting cutting edge trends. RD Franks is worth a visit if you’re a stylish reader. Frustratingly, the shop is only open during office hours and not on Saturdays, so the majority of customers are students hanging about reading the magazines.

6. The London Review Bookshop
Visiting The London Review Bookshop will make you smarter. It’s the very antithesis of the bargain book selection in your local supermarket. Bookworms will be pleased to hear that the books at the London Review Bookshop appear to be chosen for their literary, imaginative and intellectual merit. And they serve cake.

7. The Riverside Bookshop
The Riverside Bookshops is tiny, but beautiful. There’s a good selection of the latest fiction, and a little bit of everything else. Florence Welch (of Florence and the Machine) recently said it was one of her favourite places in London to hang out. It’s also temptingly close to VL Towers and causes us much accidental lunchtime book buying.

8. The Persephone Bookshop
The Persephone Bookshop is a publishing house bookshop selling Persephone books. The books are exciting – re-prints of forgotten novels by female authors with vintage designs on the endpapers. So much love has gone into creating these books, it’s hard not to eulogise at great length about how comforting they are to curl up with. You’ll be back for more.

9. Quinto Bookshop
Quinto Bookshop is a traditional, second-hand bookshop on Charing Cross Road. The shop is packed with books on all subjects. Oddly, most of the fun seems to take place just outside Quinto’s front door. Bibliophiles have been known to queue up outside the shop after the monthly stock-take to get their hands on the incoming treasures, and we’ve spotted some fans of Zachary ‘Spock’ Quinto posing outside for Vulcan salute photos (and probably heading up the road for another photo session outside Koenig’s bookshop afterwards!)

10. Ripping Yarns
Remember your favourite childhood books that inspired your love of reading? Ripping Yarns specialises in collectable children’s books so you can have more adventures with the Famous Five. If you can’t remember the title or the author, you can describe the creatures and the story to the bookshop staff and they’ll probably be able to find it for you. Ripping Yarns also sell vintage annuals, children’s compendiums and comics.

Pierre Koffmann at Selfridges - Restaurant on the Roof Oct 09 -hr-1

Chef extraordinaire Pierre Koffmann stands on the roof of Selfridges department store, where he will be hosting his pop-up Restaurant on the Roof during London Restaurant Festival and beyond.

What a magnificent view! We think he’ll be pretty happy working here for a few weeks, it almost rivals the vista from VL towers.

Kate Scott at the Flour Power City stall

Exciting news for foodies: a brand new farmers’ market opens in London tomorrow.

Sourced Market at St Pancras International has stalls piled high with fruit and veg, cheeses, olives, cakes, fresh juices and wines.

The Flour Power City Bakery stand is sure to be popular, selling delicious breads and cakes, and possibly the best chocolate brownies in London.

The bakery already has stands at Borough Market and farmers’ markets around London.

Kate Scott from Flour Power City was very excited about the new opening.

“We started off in Hoxton Street 12 years ago and we’ve just grown from there,” she said. “We tried shops but they didn’t seem to work for some reason.”

It seems markets are the place to be. Make sure you check out Sourced Market when it opens next week!

Zakee Shariff Talks to Visit London at the Launch of her New Pop Up Shop

Zakee Shariff (left) talks to two fashion journalists

Last night, Zakee Shariff’s new collection for Roxy Heart opened in a pop-up shop within Beyond the Valley in Carnaby. I went down to the launch to meet her.

Head into Newburgh Quarter, behind London’s famous Carnaby Street, and you’ll be welcomed by colourful hieroglyphics on the pavement.

The bright triangles – are they arrowheads? Native American Tepees? Children’s potato prints? – invite you to follow them, through the door of fabulous design boutique Beyond the Valley, and into a room covered floor-to-ceiling in the same triangle print. This is “Fly Like An Eagle”: the Roxy Heart by Zakee Shariff Pop Up Shop.

Surrounded by her gorgeous designs (bright autumn / winter tea dresses, heavy knits and striking t-shirts vie for position alongside statement jewellery and relaxing limited edition artworks), I took a few moments to talk to London-born Zakee about the city she calls home.

Where do you live in London?
Kilburn. I was born and raised in Hammersmith, and I’ve lived in Holloway, but right now I live in Kilburn. I like it; there’s a nice community feel there. Kilburn is its own little world: there’s a lovely park, nice places to eat and drink. It’s great.

What’s great about Newburgh Quarter?
Again, I think it’s that great community feeling. I’ve always loved this street, since I was little. It’s still got such a fantastic range of independent stores; Carnaby’s lost that independent spirit a bit now, but in Newburgh, it’s still there. The shops here are really trying to do something different.

Let us in on a London shopping secret…
My new London shopping secret is Merchant Archive in Queen’s Park. It’s a beautiful second-hand clothes shop. I’d walked past it loads on my way to yoga, and hadn’t gone in. Then, when I did, I couldn’t believe I hadn’t been there sooner! It’s full of beautiful things. And run by a former dental nurse!

Where do you find your inspiration?
Lots of places: street culture; music; travel; spirituality. In London, I like to escape to Hampstead Heath for some quiet – I love it to death! I’m also a reggae lover, so whichever clubs are playing reggae music…

Beyond the Valley and Roxy Heart by Zakee Shariff at 2 Newburgh, London

Are you involved in London Fashion Week?
I’m not actually taking part this year. But I’ll be going along. As an artist, it’s amazing to see all the new designers. There’s a beautiful glasses designer, Prism; I’m really looking forward to seeing their new collection. They’re really different. At the moment, they’re only available in places like Browns and Dover Street Market…

What is it about London’s Design Scene that gets you excited?
I don’t know exactly. It’s always been the same, the London way; very strong. I love the attitude and strength. It’s not so glamorous now, and I like that. London’s my home, and I love it.

[Roxy Heart by Zakee Shariff is at Beyond the Valley, 2 Newburgh, London, W1 until 26 September]
