It’s been a good month for birthdays. Wicked turned 6 earlier this week, and Westfield Stratford City celebrated its first birthday the week before. Here’s a lovely video showing some highlights from their first, impressive year.

Way back in 1980, when Nicholas Nickleby and Educating Rita were the hot theatre shows in the West End, the Society of London Theatre (SOLT) set up a half-price ticket booth in Leicester Square. 

Since then, what’s become known as the tkts booth has sold an incredible 10.9 million tickets to more than 1,200 shows. Its friendly staff are responsible for 1 in 39 theatre tickets sold in the West End.

Tomorrow the booth, based in the Clocktower Building on the south side of Leicester Square, celebrates its 30th birthday. tkts will be giving away a free theatre ticket to the first 30 people in the queue tomorrow morning. If you’re not able to get up that early, make sure you grab one of the tkts scratchcards being handed out in Leicester Square tomorrow and Wednesday to win some great theatrical prizes.

The life-sized Piazza party games will be going on throughout the weekend: Games like the classic market trader “basket race” and a “human fruit machine”.

There’ll also be a fantastic line-up of interactive workshops and the area’s favourite street performers will put on an evening cabaret.

Tomorrow is the start of the London Wetland Centre’s 10th anniversary celebrations.

And what better way to mark the occasion than with this great video by Cazzyweb of her day out at the centre in Barnes.

Pop down to the Wetland Centre during the birthday week (29 May-6 Jun) and you’ll find lots going on. 

Gyles Brandreth, who lives near the Wetland Centre and is a keen supporter, is cutting the birthday cake on Saturday at 12.00 to launch the celebrations. If you’re around on the day, you’ll be invited to join in the opening celebrations at noon, and receive a free piece of the wetland-themed cake!

On Tuesday 9 March, the London Eye will celebrate its 10th birthday with a spectacular light show and party.

This week, our attention turns to theatre: namley musicals.

Today is Dirty Dancing The Musical’s birthday! It was three years ago today that the new musical opened at the Aldwych Theatre in London and broke all box office records with advance ticket sales of £11m.

And how is this brilliantly cheesy musical celebrating its 3rd birthday? With even more tickets going on sale! You can now book tickets to see Dirty Dancing right up until October 2010, taking the show up to its fourth birthday.

But Dirty Dancing is actually just like the Baby in the show in West End musical terms: yesterday The Lion King celebrated its 10th birthday. Celebrity guests arrived on a “yellow” carpet at the special 10th anniversary performance at the Lyceum Theatre. Azure blue skies, shocking pink ribbons and a thousand purple balloons provided the colouful backdrop for Vinopolis’  10^th birthday celebrations today.

TV wine expert Oz Clarke was the velvety-voiced star turn.  He treated the crowd to reminiscences about being Dom Jolleyed in SE1 and succumbing to the allure of the Green Fairy during  a Vinopoils absinthe tasting. He also joked that Vinopolis really wanted his Big Wine Adventure  chum James May to appear instead of him!

Oz, Rupert Ellwood (MD of Vinopolis) and the Mayor of Southwark cut the celebratory pink ribbon, the nets opened and the purple balloons gently spilled over the London skyline, each carrying a pair of complimentary Vinopolis Grapevine tickets. Catch one if you can as it’s a really good tour. There’s also a mystery prize for whoever finds the balloon that travels the furthest from Vinopolis!
