A brand new wax figure of top Jamaican runner Usain Bolt has just joined the sports zone in Madame Tussauds in London.

The world is waiting to see if the three-times gold medallist Usain can take home more gold during the London 2012 games. This week is the perfect time to visit Madame Tussauds to see the sporting hero striking his famous “to di world” pose.

As well as finding out how you measure up against speedy Bolt, you can also meet wax figures of other great sporting legends including David Beckham, Rafael Nadal, Jessie Owens, Mohammed Ali and Team GB favourites, diver Tom Daley and heptathlete Jessica Ennis.

Have you been to Madame Tussauds recently? Which figure do you think it the most lifelike?

David Beckham Nominates Gabriella Roseje as his Choice for a London 2012 Torchbearer http://blog.visitlondon.com/2011/06/david-beckham-nominates-gabriella-roseje-as-his-choice-for-a-london-2012-torchbearer/ http://blog.visitlondon.com/2011/06/david-beckham-nominates-gabriella-roseje-as-his-choice-for-a-london-2012-torchbearer/#comments Mon, 13 Jun 2011 17:02:39 +0000 http://blog.visitlondon.com/?p=21634

I went along to the East Wintergarden in Canary Wharf this lunchtime to see David Beckham unveil his nomination for an Olympic Torchbearer.

Gabriella Roseje is from Bermondsey in London, and has played sport all her life; more recently she’s started coaching others. She works with people from disadvantaged backgrounds to help them get into sport.

Beckham said, “Gabriella is an impressive and inspiring person. Not only is she successful in her own right, she willingly supports and helps those around her. I’m proud to nominate her as Samsung’s first Olympic Torchbearer. The nomination campaign aims to give the unsung heroes in communities across the world their chance to shine in the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay. Gabriella is a perfect example of the kind of qualities we are looking for in a person to run with the Olympic Flame.”

Just 18 years old, it was clear Gabriella was both excited and overwhelmed at being nominated as this slightly fuzzy video shows:

Gabriella’s nomination means she’ll be one of the Samsung Torch Relay runners: the company is looking to recruit 1,359 more inspirational people to be part of the total 8,000 relay runners. If you want to nominate someone, or just find out more, visit www.samsung.com/uk/london2012

Football legend Ian Wright and London Mayor Boris Johnson joined young footballers this morning to mark the handover of the England 2018 World Cup bid to FIFA.

Meanwhile, the 1,752-page bid document travelled from London to Zurich, where it was presented to FIFA officials by David Beckham.

If England wins its bid to host the World Cup in 2018, matches will take place at Wembley Stadium, Arsenal Emirates, Tottenham Hotspur’s new stadium and the Olympic stadium.

If you want to see the World Cup in London in 2018, back the bid by adding your name to the list of supporters.
