London Theatre News: Miss Saigon, Shakespeare In Love, The Duchess Of Malfi, Ghosts

Miss Saigon

Imagine how daunting it must be to perform on a West End stage for the first time. Now imagine you’re making your professional stage debut at 17-years-old and you’re from a totally different country. That’s the situation Filipino-American actress Eva Noblezada will be facing when she leads the cast of Cameron Mackintosh’s new production of Miss Saigon which opens next year. Wow!

Shakespeare in Love

Another treat for summer 2014 is the stage adaptation of theatre-inspired 1998 movie Shakespeare In Love. The Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard screenplay is being adapted for stage by Lee Hall, whose previous hit productions include Billy Elliot and The Pitman Painters.

The Duchess of Malfi

British movie star Gemma Arterton will open the Globe’s new indoor space, the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, as The Duchess Of Malfi in January, and it has just been revealed that Shameless’s Sean Gilder and Ripper Street’s David Dawson are set to join her in the production.

Before Christmas, there’s also a chance to catch the Almeida Theatre’s acclaimed production of Ghosts when it transfers into the Trafalgar Studios from 17 December. Good news if, like me, you missed it in Islington. The theatre was previously playing host to Jamie Lloyd’s much-lauded Trafalgar Transformed season. That will now take a short hiatus while the Ibsen classic entertains theatre-goers this Christmas.

Carol Singers at TKTS

If you’re feeling Christmassy, you may be excited about news of TKTS carolling, taking place at the iconic Leicester Square ticket booth on 20 December. From 16:00 the West End Gospel Choir will be joined by the cast from London’s favourite shows to spread some Christmas cheer. Come along and join in.

Theatre Award

And finally, a huge congratulations to all the Evening Standard Theatre Award winners, among them Adrian Lester and Rory Kinnear, Helen Mirren, David Walliams, Kevin Spacey, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Maggie Smith.
