Week one of the summer holidays and it’s been pretty good so far. Monday was the great outdoors, Tuesday all the fun of the fair and a visit to theatreland on Wednesday.

I took my boys to see The Go! Go! Go! Show, which recently opened at the Leicester Square Theatre. The production is the first from The Show 4 Kids, a company set up by Mike Stock – he of Stock Aitken Waterman fame.

The kids were buzzing in anticipation as we descended downstairs to the basement theatre. The excitement mounted, as we spotted a collection of odd socks lying across the seats. The boys had just enough time to argue over who got which sock before the curtain went up.

The Go! Go! Go! Show is billed as a “pop musical for kids”. Somewhat reminiscent of the popular kids’ programme Hi-5, it features five vibrant and brightly dressed performers.

The action begins when the gang awakes one morning to find their socks are missing. Not the most spectacular of storylines perhaps, but stick with it. The culprit is a mischievous creature called the Fluffalope, who likes dining out on old socks. And so begins the crazy caper, written by Dean Wilkinson (Ant & Dec, SM:TV, CBBC, Disney). They set out to catch the Fluffalope, take him home and track down their all important garments.

To grown-ups it may sound like an unlikely plot but the kids had a blast. The poppy songs were catchy, though for some reason mimed in parts. The Go! Go! Go! Show was not just about sitting and watching, but getting up and interacting. There was magic, dancing, sock-throwing and even some Itchy Oo (the Go-getters’ very own martial art).

The show is described as “perfect for all ages”. I treated this with caution and left my two-year-old at home, but he would have loved it. There were babies in the audience who were transfixed by the high-energy entertainment. My other two, who are four and almost seven, smiled and giggled throughout. Finally, the icing on the cake was getting to meet the cast at the end.

Go! Go! Go! is on at Leicester Square Theatre until 30 August. Book Go! Go! Go! tickets here
