Worm Cakes and Ant Cocktails: Halloween Food and Drink in London

If you’re feeling brave this Halloween, there’s plenty of ghoulish food and drink to try in London.

At Artesian bar, you can enjoy a scary Vieux Carre cocktail, containing cognac, rye whiskey, vermouth, bitters and herbal liqueur, plus two special ingredients: Columbian giant ants and mopani worms!

Or perhaps you’d prefer The Living Room’s spine-tingling Zombie, Corpse Reviver or Blood & Sand cocktails? (These cocktails are a little tamer: despite the names there are no creepy ingredients.)

Over at Gelupo in Soho, you can enjoy a Sanguinaccio gelato, made from chocolate, pigs’ blood and Marsala. Or head to Harrods for some more traditional treats: chocolates in the shape of witches, ghosts, pumpkins, skulls and eyeballs.

Even cupcakes are going spooky this Halloween. There’s a devilishly delicious selection available at The Hummingbird Bakery, topped with spiders’ webs, monsters, ghosts and pumpkins.

AAGGHH! It’s Alive! comes to Fortnum & Mason’s Demonstration Kitchen on 27 October. You can find out how to make scary Halloween dishes, from finger pies to worm cakes, perfect for Halloween parties.

Or pop into Carluccio’s for some terrifyingly good gifts for trick-or-treaters, including pumpkin lollies, ghost and pumpkin biscuits, ghost meringues, bat biscuits, Halloween jellies and chocolate pumpkins.

Happy Halloween!

In Pictures: The Corinthia Hotel

Last night I had a look round the recently-opened Corinthia Hotel.

The hotel is dripping with five-star touches, from the huge bathrooms, to the walk-in wardrobes to the soon-to-open on-site Harrods store.

What I’d really like to show you is the beyond-luxurious ESPA Life spa which is due to open this month, but it’s all top secret until then. Take a look at the CGI images on The Corinthia’s website and you’ll start to get the idea.

Other points to note are the hotel’s two restaurants, The Northall serving up modern British cuisine and seafood restaurant Massimo (where Cameron Diaz, Hugh Grant and Johnny Depp have all been spotted).

And should you want to leave the hotel, it’s handily located within a few minutes of Embankment and Charing Cross station and is flanked by Boris bike docking stations.

Halloween Treats at Harrods this Weekend

There are plenty of tricks and treats on offer for your little horrors at Harrods this October.

Me and the brood were invited to the prestigious department store last weekend for a sneak preview of all the eerie events this Halloween.

We turned the dressing box upside down to find suitable attire. B went as a werewolf, N as a blue fluffy alien and G as Four Arms, one of Ben Ten‘s otherworldly associates.

There was fiendish face painting, spooky stories and also the opportunity to design your own pumpkin lantern – which was then carved out by a Harrods chef.

The boys were amazed by the freaky body tricks performed by a Marvin’s Magic Illusionist. Yuck… Mum and Dad were a little less impressed by the amputated arm that was horribly lifelike. We preferred the creepy crafts, organised by party professionals from Stage Star Party. There was cutting, sticking and heaps and heaps of glitter to get busy with, and the boys have a couple of horrible haunted houses to show for it.

Having worked up an appetite, it was time for a pit stop. We sat ourselves down in one of the stylish booths at Yoomoo, Harrods’ new frozen yoghurt bar. You choose your flavour, then decorate it with a selection of fruit, chocolate and other goodies. In keeping with the theme, there were also spooky sprinklings and scary skeletons.

The boys had just enough time – and space –for one of Lily Vanilli’s fabulous cupcakes, which she decorated in seriously scary style.

Visitors to Harrods this Halloween weekend can partake in these ghoulish goings-on:

  • Saturday and Sunday 30-31 October: Crafts, face-painting, magic and Yoomoo are all available on the fourth floor
  • 30-31 October: Head for Waterstones on the third floor for tarot readings and spooky stories at 2pm, 2.30pm and 3pm
  • 30 October: Tips on how to carve a pumpkin, visit Harrods Food Hall
  • Friday 29 October: Lily Vanilli will launch her book A Zombie Ate My Cupcake at a monstrous tea party at 1pm on the lower ground floor

Video of the Week: Random Pieces of London

Daniele Tenerani got in touch this week to tell us about this video. Three weeks ago, Daniele visited London, and had a great time filming some different parts of the city.

Here’s the results: a great little film that takes you from Covent Garden to Little Venice, to the terraces at Upton Park and the banks of the Thames.

Video of the Week: Day in London

This week, we’ve spotted this great video from lebensgeniesser1, although the credits say it was written by Dave Hughes, with co-writers Chris, Fiona, James, Joleen, Niamh, Richard, and Stuart.

They describe it as follows:

an experiment — mixing (a) old friends, (b) new friends, (c) the capital city of a kingdom, (d) 1,200 photos, and (e) late afternoon ice cream in the park.

It certainly looks like they had a great time. Look out for the V&A, Harrods, Hyde Park and Old Compton Street in Soho on a pretty packed day out in London. Plus great music from The Killers!

Visit London Asks: What’s Your Favourite Department Store in London?

Congratulations to Selfridges which was named Best Department Store in the World last week, beating off competition from the likes of Bloomingdales in New York and Lane Crawford in Hong Kong.

The award was based on a number of important shopping criteria including customer service, outstanding in-store experience and strong financial performance.

So would Selfridges make it to the top of your London list and why? Does the huge cosmetics hall float your boat, or are you move of a Harrods devotee?

Do you like to peruse the exclusive food hall at Harvey Nichols. Or do you prefer John Lewis for the price guarantee?
