Roux at the Pembury

Across the road from the Houses of Parliament, young mixologists Abdulai Kpekawa and Liam Cotter have quietly re-launched Roux at the Pembury.

The smart cocktail bar looks like the kind of place where you might spot a senior member of the House, with leather Chesterfield sofas, Art Deco lampshades and impeccable service.

The bar’s located on the first floor above Michel Roux Jr’s French fine dining restaurant Roux at Parliament Square, which opened in May last year.

Subtle signage means you can easily walk past the entrance without noticing it, as most tourists and office workers were doing when we visited on Monday evening.

We were warmly welcomed by Cotter, who introduced the list of 12 specialist cocktails, arranged as a menu of hors d’oeuvres, plats principaux and desserts.

I enjoyed the refreshing Three Citrus Ricky (Ketel One Citroen, fino sherry, yuzu, lemon, pineapple and soda), while my friend tried the signature Pembury Cup (Pimm’s, Tanqueray gin, watermelon, coriander and champagne).

There’s also a range of posh bar snacks including pork scratchings with smoked paprika, peppers stuffed with feta cheese, and beef and ale pie.

Cocktails cost from £8 to £9.25. If you’re after a little bit of affordable luxury in Central London, I’d recommend a visit to this hidden gem.

Video of the Week: Santa in London on Boris Bikes

Yesterday, we had a photo of cycling santas. Today, a video. This feels like a suitably silly festive film for you this Christmas Eve.

See if you can spot the following attractions as this team of santas (and a couple of rudolfs) take their boris bikes for a spin around London:

Well done to the team from the FreshNetworks office for putting together this brilliant bit of seasonal nuttiness. Great soundtrack too. Enjoy.

Bonfire Night in LondonLast week was all about Halloween. Hope you all had a suitably scary weekend.

This week, London looks to Bonfire Night with a whole host of different firework displays taking place across the capital.

Visit London Asks: What’s Your Favourite Period in London’s History?

Mayor Boris Johnson launched Disney's A Christmas Carol in New York yesterday

Last week, we asked for your Only in London recommendations. Thanks for adding your thoughts to the comments!

With news announced yesterday that London will be heading back to Victorian times this Christmas with the exciting world premiere of Disney’s A Christmas Carol and Christmas Carol themed Christmas lights in the West End, we’ve been discussing London’s history here at VL towers.

So, imaginative thinking caps on. We want to know, if you were given a time machine, which period of London’s history would you most like to travel back to?!

Would you be interested in galloping across to Hampton Court Palace with Henry VIII and his Tudor court?

Or maybe you’d like to pop into an 18th century coffee house, and witness the new revolutionary age of pamphlets and trade and Enlightenment.

Perhaps you’re another fan of Dickens’ Victorian London, and would like to go back to the golden age of railway with stations like St Pancras; new buildings like the Houses of Parliament, and the Royal Albert Hall; the Great Exhibition of 1851, and the wonderful Crystal Palace.

Or would you rather swing with Twiggy and The Stones in Carnaby Street in the 1960s? Let us know!
