Top West End Musicals to See in 2014

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels at Savoy Theatre

I don’t know about you, but when I’m wondering whether that last mince pie was a good idea and if I might not be able to leave my bed until Easter I like to give myself the incentive of a new musical to get moving. Luckily, there is a fine new selection in 2014.

There’s a treat of cheating and conniving coming to the Savoy Theatre, when Dirty Rotten Scoundrels opens in March. Adding the West End know-how of Robert Lindsay and Katherine Kingsley to the laugh-bringing abilities of former One Man, Two Guvnors lead Rufus Hound, the US hit is given a hefty helping of British quality.

At the St James Theatre, another American hit gets a UK premiere when Urinetown opens in February. The tale of a futuristic city suffering a severe drought, where the public toilets are harshly policed and offenders get a one-way trip to Urinetown, the show has a trio of Tonys to its name and boasts a London cast including Olivier Award-winner Jenna Russell and former star of Ghost The Musical, Richard Fleeshman.

If you love a classic rom com, The Pajama Game – with its tale of love threatened by a workforce argument at a nightwear factory – transfers to London in May after finding huge success in Chichester earlier this year. In the same month, Miss Saigon, with its more tragic tale of war-torn love, flies back into the West End with a new teenage star.

And if you’d like something brand new, I Can’t Sing! The X Factor Musical, which promises to take a very silly look at the TV phenomenon, opens at the London Palladium in March. With a story and lyrics by comedian Harry Hill and a leading lady, Cynthia Erivo – who was one of the emerging stars of 2013 – it promises to be as big a hit as Simon Cowell’s Saturday night show.olt-250
