Kensington Palace Reopens After £12m Refurbishment

I was lucky enough to have a sneak preview of the newly refurbished Kensington Palace, ahead of its opening on Monday.

The entrance to the Palace has been transformed. You now enter the building through a new light green loggia, inscribed with the details of Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee, and into a new Entrance Hub decorated with a light sculpture called Luminous Lace.

From here, you can choose to explore the Palace through four different routes, each signposted through different colours and pointers:

  • Victoria Revealed 10 lavishly decorated rooms tell the story of Queen Victoria’s life, in her own words from letters and diaries, from her birth in the Palace, through her childhood, ascension, marriage, periods of mourning and her own Diamond Jubilee
  • The King’s Apartments – grand, imposing architecture telling the stories of the courts of William and Mary, George I and George II in the 17th and 18th centuries
  • The Queen’s Apartments – more intimate rooms, lifting the curtain on the private lives of Mary II and Anne and the decline of the Stuart dynasty
  • Diana: Glimpses of a Modern Princess – a selection of five dresses work by Diana Princess of Wales at different points in her life

The section on Diana is small, but very beautifully put together. It’s fascinating to see her dresses next to photos of her wearing them, and drawings from the sketchbooks of the designers. It’s also nice to see how Diana’s style changed, from the black, strapless evening gown by Emanuel (which has never been on display before) to a shocking pink Catherine Walker dress.

Victoria Revealed is a fantastic new permanent exhibition. Told through Victoria’s letters, diaries and other writings, the rooms and objects on display paint a wonderful picture of this endlessly interesting monarch. You can see her first pair of black silk booties, her wedding dress made of Spitalfields silk and her oldest surviving mourning dress. As well as traditional portraits and objects in display cases, Victoria Revealed has a quirkier, inventive side. Mirrors are engraved with snippets from Victoria’s diaries; text appears woven into carpet, scrawled on desks, and doodled into walls. With inventive lighting, soundscapes and some gorgeous modern installations, the result is personal, creative, feeling-based storytelling, rather than a fact-heavy, traditional museum. I loved it.

I spent less time in the Kings and Queens Apartments, but am determined to go back. Fully restored, these two sections of the Palace have been taken over by theatre-makers Coney, with a series of exciting and playful installations. In the Queen’s Apartments, I saw cabinets of love letters, ships in bottles, and magnificent trees, all telling the stories of the different monarchs who’ve lived in these rooms. In the King’s Apartments, you can see rare court dress from the 18th century, and learn about the mix of celebrity, fashion, politics and treachery that defined life in the King’s court during this era.

As well as the new entrance, there’s a lovely new shop and café, and beautiful new landscaped public gardens to explore. All these wonderful developments have really improved the Palace putting it firmly back on my list of must-see attractions in London.

Five New (and Revamped) London Attractions to Look Forward to in 2012

Yes, we’re all excited about the Olympics. And the Queen’s Diamond Jubliee. And the London 2012 Festival.

But that’s not all we have to look forward to in London next year! Just when you thought London was already chock-full of thousands of exciting attrations, we bring you news of a few more… (And a couple which, while not new, are being revamped and restored in time for next year.)

1.    Cutty Sark Reopening, Spring 2012
The world’s last tea clipper will reopen in Spring next year. If, like me, you’ve been following the amazing diaries of the conservation of this incredible vessel, you’ll be pleased to know there’s not long to wait! You can get a sneak peek of things to come on their website.

2.    Kensington Palace Reopening, 26 March 2012
Another reopening I’m really looking forward to in 2012 is Kensington Palace. Again, I’ve been following developments at the site on their fantastic blog, and I can’t wait to see the revamped palace in all its glory come March. The gardens will be improved, as will accessibility, and they’ve got an exciting calendar of exhibitions and events  for 2012 to celebrate all the changes.

3.    Warner Bros Harry Potter Studio Tour, from 31 March
Another piece of excitement for London next year is the new Warner Bros Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter. Book now, and you can go on a behind-the-scenes walking tour of the film studios where the Harry Potter series was made.

4.    Emirates Air Line, from Spring 2012
Whether it’s used as a genuine transport link, or more of a tourist attraction, the cable car across the Thames, (called the Emirates Air Line), will also be ready next year. Linking The O2 and ExCeL, with the promise of stunning views across London, this will be one of the coolest new ways to travel in London next year…

5.    Tate Modern’s Oil Tanks, from Summer 2012
If Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall isn’t enough for you, then this summer you can get even more art at the iconic riverside gallery as Tate opens its newest space. Part of the London 2012 Festival, the Oil Tanks are two 30-metre wide and seven-metre high concrete chambers. Inside, there’ll be space for installations, performance art, films, lectures and more.

Kate Middleton’s Wedding Dress to be Displayed at Buckingham Palace

There’s an extra reason to visit Buckingham Palace this summer as Kate Middleton’s Royal Wedding dress will be on display from 23 July to 3 October 2011.

The famous dress, designed by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, is made of ivory and white satin-gazar and features a 2.7 metre (9 ft) train.

The Buckingham Palace display will be the first chance for the public to see the dress up-close and appreciate the intricate embroidery detail; it’s covered in lace appliqué flowers, some of which are as small as 5p coins!

Kate’s wedding shoes, veil, diamond earrings and Cartier tiara lent by the Queen will be displayed with the wedding dress. The couple’s wedding cake will also be on display.

This year’s summer opening also features an exhibition of The Queen’s Faberge collection.

In other Royal Wedding news, it was revealed today that Kensington Palace will be the new Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s temporary London residence.

Kensington Palace’s Enchanted Palace Wins Innovation Award

Congratulations to Kensington Palace. Their latest exhibition, the multi-sensory and super-cool Enchanted Palace won a top travel award last week.

Enchanted Palace took a special Editor’s Award for Innovation in Tourism at the 2010 Group Travel Awards dinner on Friday 11 June.

The exhibition is a pretty unique collaboration between Historic Royal Palaces, a theatre company called WILDWORKS and top fashion designers. Happily, this successful enchantment is to continue until January 2012, so you’ve got plenty of time to fall under its spell.

Alexandra Kim, who has the fantastic job of being the Historic Royal Palaces Curator responsible for Enchanted Palace said, “I’m absolutely delighted that Enchanted Palace has been honoured with this special award for Innovation in Tourism.

“It is a great achievement for this hugely ambitious project, which aims to offer an intriguing and captivating visitor experience at Kensington Palace whilst the historic royal residence undergoes its major £12 million renovation.”

Other London attractions to scoop top prizes at last week’s awards include:

Congratulations to all the winners and runners up.

Enchanted Palace at Kensington Palace

This weekend I finally got round to seeing the Enchanted Palace exhibition at Kensington Palace. The exhibition has been installed while the palace undergoes major renovation work until 2012.

We were told upon entering that this was a magical palace, and that the builders had turned it inside out, shaking out its stories and secrets with the dust.

Walking through Kensington Palace was like stepping into a fairytale. Each room has its own story and a theme, The Room of Enlightenment, The Room of Palace Time and so on. As you explore each room you’re encouraged to find the name of seven princesses that once lived in the palace.

The whole exhibition was, well, enchanting! Walking through a darkened room filled with sparkly, wonderful hats made by Stephen Jones, watching dancing shadows and rifling through shells, sketches and artefacts in The Room of the World, the World in a Room. My favourite room was The Room of a Sleeping Princess which contained a dress made of paper cranes.

Although beautiful, there’s something bittersweet about the Enchanted Palace. You get the sense that the princesses lived lonely and isolated lives. It’s also a little eerie, as I really felt I was wandering around in someone else’s home!

Photography isn’t allowed in the Enchanted Palace but I did get a quick snap of the Enchanted Palace afternoon tea which we enjoyed in The Orangery afterwards. Hopefully, you can make out the poster for the exhibition stamped on top of a chocolate ganache cake (delicious!)

Also, take a look at these pictures of beautiful Kensington Palace Gardens, which are free to wander round.

Have a Happy Mother’s Day in London with Magic FM

I’d like to believe every kitchen in the land is going to either be closed this Sunday, or there’ll be family members cooking WITHOUT mum’s help! I know my kitchen is going to be well and truly missing my culinary contribution.

I can just imagine the Mother’s Day late shoppers on Friday and Saturday going crazy buying up supplies of flowers, chocolates, cards and perfume to present to mum on her special day.

I shall be relaxing on the day itself, and will probably have my own mother over to come and relax with me and her grandchildren.  My mother, being the character she is, will definitely take up the invitation. But I KNOW she’ll do one of two things; she’ll either cook at her house before she comes over to mine, OR she’ll just take over my kitchen – because it would feel totally strange for her not to be in the kitchen!  The long and short is, she’ll be happy, and that’s what matters.

So what will make your mum happy this Sunday??

  • Having the family over?
  • A house full of noisy children?
  • Chocolates?
  • Flowers?
  • Perfume?

If  cooking at home doesn’t take your fancy, and you want to get out and about in London this Mother’s Day, I can highly recommend booking a Red Letter Day experience where you can choose fabulous days out such as a fancy afternoon tea at Kensington Palace.

Ronan Keating will also be doing a special Mother’s Day show on Magic 105.4 in the afternoon on Sunday, perfect to relax to if you’re driving around town or putting your feet up after a wonderful home cooked meal (like me).

For your chance to win £100 gift cards with Red Letter Days, visit www.magic.co.uk/win.

A Hofftastic time for the Met Bar at the Quintessentially Summer Party

David Hasselhoff

With recovery time now over, we can share our tales from last Thursday, when the Met Bar team headed to the Quintessentially and Perrier Jouet Summer Party held at the Orangery at Kensington Palace.

Greeted by belly dancers clutching magnums of Belle Epoque champagne as well as several eager photographers, a certain young hot blonde companion (yes that’s you Jamie) got papped in his bright pink and purple peony jacket. As the evening began, models Lily Cole and Poppy Delevigne mingled with Blur’s Alex James and Razorlight’s Johnny Borrell on the terrace, but after the champagne glasses were topped up a few times, the hot summer’s night and decadent setting started to work it’s magic. On stepping back into the palace, we were greeted by a sea of guests who had been transformed by make-up artists into characters from the Beautiful and the Damned. I (Jo) chose a feverishly feline look to match my vintage leopard-print clutch and then headed to Prangsta costumiers for a complete Las Vegas showgirl makeover, whilst Jamie became a male-courtier from the age of Marie Antoinette – sadly we are not at liberty to share the pictures!

Other frankly bemusing sights included; “Live art” in the form of a living mummy being carried on a stretcher through the party whilst several guests prodded him in compromising places to see if he really had been set in plaster! Once night had truly fallen, an unlikely star of the show appeared when The Hoff rocked up with his daughters, ‘The Hoff Drops’(pictured above). Guests were clamouring to get a piece of Mr Hasselfhoff, and Jamie was even told by one ferocious fan to “get in line” when he was only trying to catch a waiter for yet another top up.

By 11pm the palace had run out of champagne all together but with one call from the Met Bar, a fresh shipment of Perrier Jouet arrived via London’s finest for the thirsty guests.

At 1am the Belle Epoque-decorated slick fleet of Jaguars whisked the VIP guests off to the Met Bar for the after party with Roger Taylor from Duran Duran already on the decks. More guests followed our lead back to the bar for more debauchery, and by 2am the bar had hit capacity. The party continued long into the early hours; needless to say it was champagne headaches all round on Friday morning!
