<p><a href="http://www.visitlondon.com/events/detail/9198787">La Soiree</a> is a fusion show of all things fun and fabulous from cabaret to circus, burlesque to vaudeville; it&#8217;s got it all. The performance takes place at the <a href="http://www.visitlondon.com/attractions/detail/9171442">South Bank Big Top</a>, a huge coloured tent located just behind the <a href="http://www.nationaltheatre.org.uk/">National Theatre</a>.</p>
<p>The show rotates a number of artists, all unique in their special talents. Many of the performers have come straight from award-winning show <a href="http://www.lacliquelondon.com/">La Clique</a>. La Soiree is held together by a few key performers: Scandinavian contortionist Captain Frodo, &#8220;Bath Boy&#8221; David O&#8217;Mer, tumbling duo The English Gents and cabaret chanteuse Miss Behave. Each act has its own little quirks, and fine detailing that has been perfected for the short sketches.</p>
<p>Hamish McCann&#8217;s <a href="http://www.genekellyscene.com/">Gene Kelly</a>-inspired pole-dance routine was particularly memorable. He grips onto a lamppost, and holds his body horizontal as he walks through the air. The ease with which he performs is quite astounding considering the physical feat. I loved Captain Frodo, who captivates the audience while twisting his body and comically narrating his act throughout.</p>
<p>The venue is enchanting and warm, with a waft of freshly made popcorn in the air. La Soiree certainly considers the audience&#8217;s total experience. I didn’t find everything funny, and think there is perhaps a little too much clowning around, the acrobatics and tricks are so impressive I would like to see more of that area.</p>
<p>The best thing about it is every night of <a href="http://www.la-soiree.com/">La Soiree</a> is different so you can go again and again.</p>
<blockquote><p>La Soiree has been extended til <strong>27 Feb 2011</strong>. Get your <a href="http://visitlondon.eolts.co.uk/index.php?pg=72&amp;action=show&amp;showid=2600">La Soiree tickets here</a></p></blockquote>

<p>It&#8217;s been a fantastic year in London. Here we take a moment to reflect on our favourite things from 2009.</p>
<p><strong><a href="http://blog.visitlondon.com/author/cdoble/">Claire:</a><br />
</strong>I think mine was seeing the film <a href="http://www.wim-wenders.com/movies/movies_spec/wingsofdesire/wingsofdesire.htm">Wings of Desire</a> at the <a href="http://blog.visitlondon.com/2009/08/film4-summer-screen-at-somerset-house/">Somerset House Summer Screen</a>. Everything came together that night: fantastic venue, good weather, and a cool movie about Berlin with Nick Cave on the soundtrack!</p>
<p><strong><a href="http://blog.visitlondon.com/author/hcollingbourne/">Hannah:</a></strong><strong><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-5169" title="The Cloud Project's ice cream van" src="http://dx9rjq5h30myv.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/icecreamvan_edit.jpg" alt="The Cloud Project's ice cream van" width="200" height="245" /><br />
</strong>I love all the quirky, creative events that happen in London. Two of the best this year were Bompas and Parr&#8217;s <a href="http://blog.visitlondon.com/2009/12/alex-james-launches-giant-punch-bowl/">Architectural Punch Bowl</a> and the science-themed <a href="http://blog.visitlondon.com/2009/06/ice-cream-and-nanotechnology-at-the-rca/">ice cream van</a> at the <a href="http://www.visitlondon.com/attractions/detail/2229589">Royal College of Art</a> Show.</p>
<p><strong><a href="http://blog.visitlondon.com/author/jowen/">Jenny:</a><br />
</strong>My highlight of 2009 is seeing bands that I loved back in the 90s! This year I&#8217;ve been lucky enough to see <a href="http://blog.visitlondon.com/2009/10/jd-set-gig-gives-jack-a-birthday-to-remember/">Brett Anderson</a> from Suede, the <a href="http://blog.visitlondon.com/2009/07/smirnoff-ur-the-night-made-my-night-at-matter/">Pet Shop Boys</a> and <a href="http://www.visitlondon.com/events/detail/4108028">Depeche Mode</a>, who all played fantastic gigs in London.</p>
<p><strong><a href="http://blog.visitlondon.com/author/jdarwin/">Jo:</a><br />
</strong><a href="http://blog.visitlondon.com/2009/09/anish-kapoor-at-the-royal-academy-of-arts/">Anish Kapoor</a> at the Royal Academy &#8211; this groundbreaking exhibition was a breath of fresh air. The scale and ambition of the exhibition made it one of my highlights of the year. Massive reflective sculptures, a huge moving wax installation squeezing its way through the academy&#8217;s doorways, and, of course, the famous wax cannon mean I won&#8217;t forget this show in a hurry.</p>
<p><strong><a href="http://blog.visitlondon.com/author/jchappell/">Julie:</a></strong><strong><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-4504" title="Incredible act The Skating Willers. Photo: perou" src="http://dx9rjq5h30myv.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/The-Skating-Willers-photo-by-perou.jpg" alt="Incredible act The Skating Willers. Photo: perou" width="200" height="345" /><br />
</strong><a href="http://blog.visitlondon.com/2009/12/la-clique-london-at-the-roundhouse/">La Clique&#8217;s</a> intoxicating cocktail of cabaret, circus, comedy and burlesque is the best night out in London by far. Current highlights include Marawa&#8217;s fabulous disco hula hooping, Ursula Martinez&#8217;s famous strip with red hankie, Mario Queen of the Circus&#8217;s Freddy Mercury tribute, juggling and risqué chat &#8211; and manic songstress Miao Miao&#8217;s ability to get strapping blokes from the audience into uncompromising positions. I&#8217;ve been lucky enough to see <a href="http://www.visitlondon.com/events/detail/5292671">La Clique</a> five times and have thoroughly enjoyed every show!</p>
<p><strong><a href="http://blog.visitlondon.com/author/lkemp/">Lettice:</a><br />
</strong>I can&#8217;t decide between my top two highlights of 2009. I was totally terrified after I agreed to go <a href="http://blog.visitlondon.com/2009/06/thames-kayaking-in-london/">kayaking</a> in the summer but bobbing about on the Thames on a lovely sunny morning turned out to be the most peaceful and relaxing way to enjoy London. The other highlight was seeing my all-time favourite band, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Shadows">The Shadows</a>, in concert for the first time. If only I’d been kayaking with The Shadows, my year would have been perfect!</p>
<p><strong><a href="http://blog.visitlondon.com/author/zgriffiths/">Zoe:</a><br />
</strong>It&#8217;s impossible to choose between <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/theatre/drama/3562483/Piaf-at-Vaudeville-Theatre-review.html">Piaf</a> early in the year, <a href="http://blog.visitlondon.com/2009/08/hello-dolly-at-regents-park-open-air-theatre/">Hello, Dolly!</a> and <a href="http://www.shakespeares-globe.org/theatre/annualtheatreseason/asyoulikeit/">As You Like It</a> in the summer, and more recently, <a href="http://www.visitlondon.com/events/detail/6893780">Morecambe</a> for Christmassy giggles. And I really liked going to <a href="http://www.frankscafe.org.uk/">Frank&#8217;s Campari Bar</a> on top of Peckham&#8217;s multi-storey carpark in the summer. Proof that my new neighbourhood, SE15, is where it&#8217;s at.</p>

<p><a href="http://www.visitlondon.com/events/detail/5292671">La Clique London</a> started its Christmas/New Year residency at Camden&#8217;s <a href="http://www.visitlondon.com/attractions/detail/59138">Roundhouse </a>a couple of weeks ago. The show got rave reviews for its original London season earlier this year at the Hippodrome. Some of this season&#8217;s performers are the same, some are new (to me), but the show is as fresh, exciting and entertaining as ever.</p>
<p>The first act was tight, taut and terrific with a great mix of different acts. It began with an address from The Queen (impersonator <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GBm4i3fpgTU">Gerry Connolly</a>, who totally looks and sounds the part &#8211; &#8220;moist generous&#8221; of Her Maj to show up). Then there was trailer-trash trapeze, complete with Guns &#8216;n&#8217; Roses soundtrack, from the athletic Wau Wau Sisters; Freddie Mercury-inspired juggling with <a href="http://www.marioqueenofthecircus.com">Mario Queen of the Circus</a>; and a whole lotta hula from <a href="http://www.myspace.com/marawa">Marawa</a>.<img class="alignright size-full wp-image-4504" title="Incedible act The Skating Willers. Photo: perou" src="http://dx9rjq5h30myv.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/The-Skating-Willers-photo-by-perou.jpg" alt="Incedible act The Skating Willers. Photo: perou" width="200" height="345" /></p>
<p>Act Two kicked off with the gloriously chaotic <a href="http://www.meowmeowrevolution.com/">Meow Meow</a>, who took audience participation to new lengths, and indeed heights, by co-opting five fellas to carry her around the stage. Then Sweden&#8217;s <a href="http://www.carleinarhackner.com/">Carl-Einar Häckner</a><strong> </strong>clowned around, and Sam Alvarez got erotic and aerial with some very big chains.</p>
<p>I&#8217;d seen <a href="http://www.ursulamartinez.com/">Ursula Martinez</a>&#8216;s saucy burlesque striptease before but La Clique has now incorporated her &#8220;disappearing hankie&#8221; into the rest of the show to great effect, if the audience&#8217;s screams of delight (horror?!) were any indication. <a href="http://www.lacliquelondon.com/performers_theskatingwillers.asp">The Skating Willers</a> are a stand out &#8211; I can truly say I&#8217;ve never seen the like and from my seat in the second row, I almost feared a roller skate in the face as their thrilling act was performed.</p>
<p>I originally saw La Clique&#8217;s show about a year back. Since then, I&#8217;ve been a lot of variety and cabaret in London but this is still hands down the best show in town. <a href="http://visitlondon.eolts.co.uk/index.php?pg=72&amp;action=show&amp;showid=1973">Go</a>.</p>
