More a concert than a story-and-script-led musical, Let It Be presents a chronological run-through of The Beatles best bits from the 1960s pop of Hard Day’s Night to the 70s psychedelia of Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and everything in between. Let It Be will also become the latest show to introduce lower priced tickets: from 3 June, there’ll be seats available from just £15.

In other musical news, the highly anticipated X Factor Musical, called I Can’t Sing! will open at the London Palladium next year, with tickets going on sale today. Written by comedian Harry Hill and directed by Sean Foley, I Can’t Sing! begins previews at the Palladium on 27 February. The title sets the tone for the talent show-inspired musical, which features 19 original songs by Hill and Spend Spend Spend’s Steve Brown, and aims “an affectionate poke” at the popular ITV series, according to Hill and Brown.

A Doll's HouseAnother week; another West End transfer. The Young Vic’s acclaimed production of A Doll’s House will transfer to the Duke of York’s Theatre this summer, following two sell-out runs at the Young Vic. Hattie Morahan will reprise her Critics’ Circle and Evening Standard Award-winning role as Nora in the production, which runs from 8 August to 26 October, alongside fellow original cast members Dominic Rowan, Nick Fletcher and Steve Toussaint.

London Theatre News: Dirty Dancing, Almeida Festival, Kids Week; Joanna Lumley and Toby Jones http://blog.visitlondon.com/2013/05/london-theatre-news-dirty-dancing-almeida-festival-kids-week-joanna-lumley-and-toby-jones/ http://blog.visitlondon.com/2013/05/london-theatre-news-dirty-dancing-almeida-festival-kids-week-joanna-lumley-and-toby-jones/#comments Thu, 16 May 2013 10:00:53 +0000 Zoe Craig http://blog.visitlondon.com/?p=33166 Jill Winternitz and Paul Michael Jones in Dirty Dancing. Photo by Alasair MuirGood news watermelon fans: Dirty Dancing is back! Following the news that Viva Forever is closing at the end of June, the classic story of Baby and Johnny and a summer romance in 1960s America is now going to take the place of the Spice Girls’ musical at the Piccadilly Theatre from 13 July. Last time Dirty Dancing was in London, it ran for five years. This time, it’s booking until February next year.

If you’re into experimental and brand new theatre, make sure you check out this summer’s Almeida Festival, running from 9 July to 3 August. It’s a really eclectic programme, including international theatre companies, new collaborations and award-winning artists. Look out for Bryony Kimming’s new show, Credible Likeable Superstar Role Model; Lost Dogs’ new show Rabbits; and Dante or Die’s I Do, a site-specific piece that takes place in six hotel rooms 10 minutes before a wedding is due to start. For the full line-up, see almeida.co.uk/festival-2013.

The line-up for this year’s Kids Week has also been announced. Running for the whole of August in 2013, there are 34 top London shows offering free tickets to children aged 16 and under with every adult ticket bought. As well as top musicals, drama and dance shows, there are also workshops for kids interested in trying ballet, learning pop songs with the cast of Let It Be and tap dancing with Top Hat. Tickets go on sale on 18 June from kidsweek.co.uk.

The latest news from the National Theatre is that Rufus Norris will direct a new stage adaptation of the acclaimed novel Behind The Beautiful Forevers: Life, Death And Hope In A Mumbai Undercity next year. The novel by Katherine Boo is being adapted by playwright David Hare, and is a non-fiction account of life in the slums of Annawadi. If the adaptation of Mark Haddon’s novel, The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time is anything to go by, the National could have another hit on their hands.

It’s now 50 years since The Beatles released their debut single, Love Me Do. The Fab Four quickly gained international fame, and many key moments in their ensuing career took place in London. To celebrate this important anniversary and the band’s close association with the capital, you can explore the sites listed below, all of which provide a great opportunity to connect with the world of Ringo, George, John and Paul.

Abbey Road
Pay a visit to the world’s most famous pedestrian crossing, located in St John’s Wood, where you and your friends can recreate the band’s iconic album cover. Afterwards, enjoy refreshments at the nearby Beatles Coffee Shop.

Beatles Tours
Beatles experts, including Beatles Coffee Shop owner Richard Porter, conduct regular tours of London locations relevant to the band. There are a wide range of tours to choose from, both pedestrian and chauffeur-driven, and you can see everything from studios and film locations to the church in which several band members were married.

Madame Tussauds
Get up close to the Beatles in their heyday thanks to the startlingly realistic wax figures of the band at Madame Tussauds. Make sure you get a photo with your favourite Beatle!

Let It Be
Enjoy an innovative theatrical experience at the Prince of Wales Theatre, where the Beatles’ history is retold through film footage and the live performance of more than 20 of their greatest hits. Let It Be is on in London until January next year – book your ticket now.

British Music Experience
Head to The O2 in Greenwich for an immersive introduction to the best of British music, which of course includes The Beatles! Using images, video and a wealth of audio clips, the British Music Experience brings The Beatles’ magic alive, and you can even see John Lennon’s glasses.

Beatles Shop
For the perfect end to your trip, head to this charming shop for a unique souvenir. The Beatles Store offers everything from mugs and t-shirts to platinum-coated albums.

Which Beatles hotspots have you visited in London and are there any we’ve missed?

Thursday Theatre News: The New St James Theatre, Let It Be Launch, Mamma Mia Moving and Loserville http://blog.visitlondon.com/2012/08/thursday-theatre-news-the-new-st-james-theatre-let-it-be-launch-mamma-mia-moving-and-loserville/ http://blog.visitlondon.com/2012/08/thursday-theatre-news-the-new-st-james-theatre-let-it-be-launch-mamma-mia-moving-and-loserville/#comments Thu, 23 Aug 2012 18:30:22 +0000 Zoe Craig http://blog.visitlondon.com/?p=28666 This week’s top London theatre news stories:

Let It Be Rootfop Launch

One London rooftop echoed with the sounds of 1969 earlier today as the boys from the new Beatles musical, Let It Be, copied their heroes with a gig at Vista bar on top of the Trafalgar Hotel. In a nod to the famous 1969 concert on top of the Apple Corp building on Savile Row, Emanuelle Angeletti, Gordon Elsmore, Reuven Gershon and Stephen Hill, (who play Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, John Lennon and George Harrison) entertained an audience of journalists and guests. I was lucky enough to get to the front of the busy scrum of people to hear songs including Hard Day’s Night, Twist And Shout and, of course, Let It Be.

A Sneak Preview of the St James Theatre
Yesterday I had a sneak preview of the new St James Theatre in Victoria. The new complex includes a state-of-the-art 312-seat theatre and an intimate 100-seat studio, perfect for comedy, cabaret and jazz nights. There’s also a swanky foyer bar and a lovely first-floor restaurant with space for 60 covers. Some of the space reminded me a little of the Trafalgar Studios, but with more luxurious touch (fitting for a venue so close to Buckingham Palace!). The first show, Bully Boy, opens on 18 September. Check out some more photos of the venue here.

Top Hat Cast Release Album
Great news for any fans of the lovely Top Hat musical, currently running at the Aldwych Theatre: they’re releasing a cast album recording of the acclaimed show. If you want a sneak preview, you can listen to some teaser clips on the production’s Facebook page: www.facebook.com/tophatonstage

Loserville Comes to London’s West End
Loserville, the new musical from Busted star James Bourne, is coming to London’s Garrick Theatre this October, following a successful regional run. The 1970s-based musical tells the story of a computer geek and his misfit friends, who are all set to change the course of history… but don’t know it yet! The good news? There will be 25,000 tickets available for £25 or less during the first booking period. Find out more here.

Mamma Mia Charity Show for Children in Need
Following last week’s news about the West End supporting Children in Need, there’s another gala performance taking place in aid of the charity, this time of Mamma Mia! on 12 September. Celebrating the musical’s move to the Novello Theatre, this special show will feature appearances by BBC Radio 2 presenters Vanessa Feltz, Anneka Rice and Penny Smith, alongside a celebrity-packed audience.

London Theatre Casting News:
Just one piece of casting news this week: The Royal Court’s much-anticipated new show, The River will star Dominic West, Laura Donnelly and Miranda Raison. The reason this new play is such a hot ticket? It’s by the same team as the Royal Court’s previous smash: Jerusalem. That’s writer Jez Butterworth, director Ian Rickson and designer Ultz. All I know about the story is that it’s about a man, a woman, and a remote cabin on some cliffs. It runs from 18 October to 17 November, and (unusually) there are no tickets available for advanced purchase – instead you can buy tickets on the day of the performance.

Thursday Theatre News: The King’s Speech, Abigail’s Party, Let It Be, Raza Jaffrey and Lisa Dillon http://blog.visitlondon.com/2012/04/thursday-theatre-news-kings-speech-abigails-party-let-it-be-raza-jaffrey-and-lisa-dillon/ http://blog.visitlondon.com/2012/04/thursday-theatre-news-kings-speech-abigails-party-let-it-be-raza-jaffrey-and-lisa-dillon/#comments Thu, 26 Apr 2012 16:00:18 +0000 Zoe Craig http://blog.visitlondon.com/?p=26352
Sad news first: The King’s Speech is closing early, which is a real shame. I saw this show early on in its run, and thought it was a fantastic piece of theatre. You’ll have to be quick if you want to see it before it ends now: closing night is on 12 May.

This does mean there’s space for the excellent Abigail’s Party to transfer from the Menier Chocolate Factory, where it had a sold out run, to the larger Wyndham’s Theatre. Starring Jill Halfpenny, Joe Absolom and Natalie Casey (who’s hilarious), this is a brilliant new version of Mike Leigh’s classic comedy and should continue to make audiences cringe and chortle in equal measure now it’s in the West End.

Other new shows heading to London in the coming weeks are Six Actors In Search Of A Director, a new comedy written and directed by Steven Berkoff at the Charing Cross Theatre from 16 May; and Democracy, Sheffield Theatre’s critically acclaimed production of Michael Frayn’s 2003 hit, at the Old Vic from 15 June.

Finally, have you ever fancied yourself as one of The Beatles? New West End theatrical concert, Let It Be, is running open auditions to find actor-musicians to play the fab four. Head to the Gielgud Theatre on 8 May to show off your talents; successful applicants will join the cast of Let It Be when it opens at the Prince of Wales Theatre in September this year.

London Cast News:

Star of American hit series Smash, Raza Jaffrey is to play the sleazy lawyer Billy Flynn in Chicago from 16 May to 14 July this summer. He’ll then be replaced by Olympic gold medallist and Dancing On Ice judge Robin Cousins.

Lisa Dillon will star alongside Stephen Mangan in the Royal Court’s forthcoming production of Birthday, from 22 June. Joe Penhall’s tense new comedy is about a couple waiting for the arrival of their new baby.

Hard Rock Calling in Hyde Park http://blog.visitlondon.com/2010/07/hard-rock-calling-in-hyde-park/ http://blog.visitlondon.com/2010/07/hard-rock-calling-in-hyde-park/#comments Thu, 01 Jul 2010 09:26:35 +0000 Aly http://blog.visitlondon.com/?p=11318

The spectacular Hard Rock Calling took place over the weekend in London. The concerts entertained thousands of rock music lovers.

There was a great atmosphere as legends Pearl Jam, Stevie Wonder and Paul McCartney took to the stage in the middle of Hyde Park. Other main stage performers included Jamiroquai, Corinne Bailey Rae, Elvis Costello and Crowded House, with the Bandstand and Pepsi Max Stage providing additional acts to entertain the crowds.

London truly sizzled in the scorching summer heat and we could not have hoped for more perfect weather! Even the giant screen showing England’s World Cup dream being shattered on the Sunday could not spoil the occasion as revellers settled back with a beer or two to enjoy the show. All were welcome and almost 50,000 fans came to enjoy the laid-back vibe of the festival.

Some of my many highlights included Pearl Jam’s Alive and Stevie Wonder’s Superstition. Paul McCartney kept the fans happy as he sang Beatles classics Let It Be and Hey Jude then surprised fans with a spectacular firework display at the end.

Hard Rock Cafés are known throughout the globe for their ability to bring music to the public and this festival was no exception. With the perfect line up, sunshine and crowd, Hard Rock Calling 2010 was truly unforgettable.

Check out the other great Music Festivals in London this summer.
