John is best known for playing the role of Christian Clarke in EastEnders (BBC) for the past five years. In 2010, he was part of the panel on Over the Rainbow (BBC). He has worked extensively as a singer and dancer in musical theatre, playing Rum Tum Tugger in the official film production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats.

What does A Chorus Line mean to you?
It’s an iconic musical and being involved in it is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. A Chorus Line is the forefather of reality TV shows, such as X Factor, and is therefore particularly relevant today.

What’s your favourite song from A Chorus Line?
“Dance Ten, Looks Three” for obvious reasons!

When was the first time you saw A Chorus Line and how many times have you seen it?
I’d never seen the stage show, but I did see the movie while I was training myself.

Do you think A Chorus Line is the ultimate dancer’s musical?
I don’t think A Chorus Line is the ultimate dancer’s musical; I think it’s the ultimate performer’s musical.

A Chorus Line at the London Palladium

Why do you think A Chorus Line has been so successful?
I think it’s successful because it deals with real emotions and real-life stories. It isn’t a fairy tale or a fantasy, it offers a glimpse into the lives of performers striving to achieve their dreams. It’s inspirational.

What does performing at the London Palladium mean to you?
It’s legendary! Icons and idols have walked through the corridors, sat in the dressing rooms, laughed, cried, and sweated on that stage. It has an energy all of its own.

What do you bring to the role of Zach?
I bring my own experience to the role. I’m not so old that I can’t remember what it was like to be young, eager and excited by all the possibilities that lay before me. But I’m also old enough to know what it feels like to have a fresh batch of kids right behind you snapping at your heels. I know what it feels like to be rejected, to have your whole self worth wrapped up in a “Yes” or a “No”.

John Partridge in A Chorus Line

What part of a musical do you enjoy most; the dancing, acting, or singing?
I enjoy all of them equally.

Any lucky charms or rituals before you go on stage?
No, I am not superstitious. Preparation is King.

How important are your fans to you?
My fans are extremely important to me as they root for you, encourage you and support you – a little like family.

The National Theatre’s production of The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time won seven awards at last night’s Olivier Awards, equalling the record set last year by Matilda The Musical.

As well as Best New Play, Simon Stephens’ adaptation of Mark Haddon’s novel featured the following winners: Luke Treadaway for Best Actor, Nicola Walker for Best Supporting Actress, Marianne Elliott for Best Director, Paule Constable for the White Light Award for Lighting Design, Bunny Christie and Finn Ross for the XL Video Award for Best Set Design and Ian Dickinson and Adrian Sutton for Best Sound Design. The Curious Incident is currently playing at the Apollo Theatre, following a successful West End transfer in March. It’s one of the best shows I’ve seen in recent years, so if you’re able to book a ticket, go! The show is now booking until January 2014.

Helen Mirren. Photo by Giles KeyteThe Audience, currently playing at the Gielgud Theatre and Sweeney Todd which ran at the Adelphi Theatre in the summer took two actor awards each: Helen Mirren won Best Actress for portraying The Queen and Richard McCabe took Best Supporting Actor for playing Harold Wilson in the former; Michael Ball and Imelda Staunton won Best Actor in a Musical and Best Actress in A Musical for their roles in Sweeney Todd. The brilliant Sondheim musical also won the prize for Best Musical revival.

Five New West End Musicals to Look Forward To in 2013 http://blog.visitlondon.com/2012/12/five-new-west-end-musicals-to-look-forward-to-in-2013/ http://blog.visitlondon.com/2012/12/five-new-west-end-musicals-to-look-forward-to-in-2013/#comments Wed, 26 Dec 2012 11:00:42 +0000 Zoe Craig http://blog.visitlondon.com/?p=30806 This year has been an exciting one for top West End musicals. From Top Hat to Kiss Me, Kate, with the brilliant Sweeney Todd, and The Bodyguard, not to mention Viva Forever, there have been some fantastic musicals on offer.

Here are just some of the great shows we have to look forward to next year:

A Chorus Line1. A Chorus Line, London Palladium from 2 Feb
Back in the West End for the first time since the 70s, the award-winning A Chorus Line comes to London’s Palladium in February, starring John Partridge and Scarlett Strallen as Zach and Cassie, with Leigh Zimmerman playing Sheila and Victoria Hamilton-Barritt playing Diana. Altogether now: “One… singular sensation, every little step she takes…”

2. The Book of Mormon, Prince of Wales Theatre from 26 Feb
Another multi-award winning show, The Book of Mormon is the first of two Broadway imports to hit the West End in 2013. This first will make its UK premiere at the Prince of Wales Theatre. Written by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, it’s the story of two teenage Mormon missionaries trying to convert a Ugandan village. As it contains explicit language, this is a show for over 18s only: time will tell whether UK audiences love it as much as their US counterparts.

3. Once, Phoenix Theatre from 16 Mar
This year’s Tony Award for Best New Musical went to Once; and from March we can see it on our side of the pond at the Phoenix Theatre. Based on the 2006 Irish musical film of the same name, Once features an ensemble cast of actor/musicians and tells the story of an Irish musician and a Czech immigrant and their shared love of music.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory4. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Theatre Royal Drury Lane from 18 May
Hot on the heels of Matilda comes a new Roald Dahl-based musical. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory features a host of musical stars including music and lyrics by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, a book by the award-winning playwright David Greig and choreography by Peter Darling, the chap behind both Billy Elliot and Matilda. It’s directed by Skyfall director Sam Mendes, and stars Douglas Hodge as Willy Wonka, and plays at the wonderful Theatre Royal Drury Lane from May. Sounds like a perfect recipe for success…

5. The Sound of Music, Open Air Theatre from 25 Jul
Finally for musicals in 2013, I’m really excited about a new production of The Sound of Music at the Open Air Theatre. Opening in July, this Rodgers and Hammerstein classic is sure to be a real treat: the past few musicals from the Open Air Theatre have been amazing, including three winners of the Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival.

If you prefer your shows without all that lovely singing and dancing, check out my tips for the top London plays coming in 2013.

What musicals are you looking forward to seeing in 2013? Let us know in the comments below.

Thursday Theatre News: Record-Breaking Matilda, A Chorus Line, and Show Extensions http://blog.visitlondon.com/2012/09/thursday-theatre-news-record-breaking-matilda-a-chorus-line-and-show-extensions/ http://blog.visitlondon.com/2012/09/thursday-theatre-news-record-breaking-matilda-a-chorus-line-and-show-extensions/#comments Thu, 13 Sep 2012 16:30:08 +0000 Zoe Craig http://blog.visitlondon.com/?p=29118 Firstly (and fittingly for Roald Dahl Day) congratulations to Matilda the Musical for making it into the Guinness Book of Records! The hit musical won the awards for Best New Musical, Best Actress in a Musical, Best Actor in a Musical, Best Director, Best Theatre Choreographer, Best Set Design and Best Sound Design at the Olivier Awards last year, stealing the record Nicholas Nickleby (1980), which had retained the title for Most Olivier Award Wins for more than 20 years.

Second, there’s a new musical on the horizon. A Chorus Line opens at the London Palladium next year: the first London revival of the show ever. Featuring the iconic songs One (Singular Sensations), What I Did For Love, I Can Do That and Hope I Get It, the Olivier Award-winning musical is the story of 17 dancers auditioning for a Broadway show. It’ll play a limited season from 2 February (press night 19 February) to 29 June.

The Wizard of Oz at The London Palladium http://blog.visitlondon.com/2011/03/the-wonderful-wizard-of-oz-at-the-london-palladium/ http://blog.visitlondon.com/2011/03/the-wonderful-wizard-of-oz-at-the-london-palladium/#comments Thu, 17 Mar 2011 15:00:06 +0000 Milly Kenny-Ryder http://blog.visitlondon.com/?p=20258

I was finally off to see the Wizard, the new production of The Wizard of Oz at The Palladium.

The show stars Danielle Hope, who won the starring role of Dorothy in the popular eponymous TV programme. Avoiding the gushy sentimentality that can come with the part, Hope’s voice is strong with just the right amount of vulnerability. I couldn’t fault her. This production also welcomes Michael Crawford back to the stage. Known best in theatreland as the original Phantom (and on TV as Frank Spencer in Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em) he is at home in this Andrew Lloyd Webber extravaganza.

No expense is spared in the production’s spectacular special effects. I was overwhelmed by the sparkling revolving set, the glorious costumes and the convincing cyclone. Each manoeuvre is perfectly executed, including incredible stunts hovering over the audience.

Along with the familiar classics, three new songs have been added. Hannah Waddingham is brilliant as the pointy nosed witch, executing a bizarre Cheryl Cole-like routine in one song. Dorothy’s three loyal friends are well cast too: Paul Keating as the dippy scarecrow; Edward Baker-Duly as a fantastic tap dancing tin man; and David Ganly the overtly camp lion.

Wicked has been dominating the London stage for long enough, it’s about time the original story marked its territory and this is a brilliant show.

The Wizard of Oz musical is booking until 17 September, buy your Wizard of Oz tickets here.

Thursday Theatre News: Mackenzie Crook, Ralf Little, Chris Fountain and Matt Willis http://blog.visitlondon.com/2010/08/thursday-theatre-news-mackenzie-crook-ralf-little-chris-fountain-and-matt-willis/ http://blog.visitlondon.com/2010/08/thursday-theatre-news-mackenzie-crook-ralf-little-chris-fountain-and-matt-willis/#comments Thu, 19 Aug 2010 17:00:28 +0000 Zoe Craig http://blog.visitlondon.com/?p=13535 This week’s theatre news is all about cast announcements.

Firstly, former Busted star Matt Willis will be wielding a welding torch in Flashdance next month, alongside West End regular Victoria Hamilton-Barritt. The kitsch 80s musical, which is choreographed by Arlene Phillips, will be Matt’s West End debut. Good luck, Matt!

Another teen idol, Hollyoaks star Chris Fountain is also coming to the West End this September. Chris will lead the cast of new musical Departure Lounge at the new Waterloo East Theatre, alongside Verity Rushworth and Liam Tamne, who both previously starred in Hairspray.

A second soap star to head to the London stage from September is Kevin Kennedy. You and I know him better as Curly from Corrie. But from 6 September, he’ll play Pop in the Queen rock musical, We Will Rock You.

Finally for musicals this week is the news that Sally Dexter is to join Sister Act, taking over from Whoopi Goldberg in the role of Mother Superior from the end of the month. They’re pretty big shoes to fill, but we think London stage regular Sally’s got the feet for the job!

And last but not least, Mackenzie Crook (who was so brilliant in the multi-award-winning Jerusalem last year) and Ralf Little (from BBC sitcoms The Royle Family and Two Pints Of Lager And A Packet Of Crisps) will star in The Aliens at the Bush Theatre, which starts previews from 15 September. This is the UK premier of this new play by Annie Baker, about two professional dropouts musing on magic mushrooms and music…

Finally, next Sunday (29) there’ll be a particularly special performance at the London Palladium. The Front of House team and stage crew will emerge from their places behind the scenes and take to the stage for one night only. The unique variety show is raising money for The Theatrical Guild, a charity for Backstage & Front of House staff and U Can Ask Angels, an organisation which helps families affected by disability. You can book tickets to Gareth Parnell’s Sunday Night at the London Palladium here.

Sheridan Smith Launches Big Dance at London Palladium http://blog.visitlondon.com/2010/07/sheridan-smith-launches-big-dance-at-london-palladium/ http://blog.visitlondon.com/2010/07/sheridan-smith-launches-big-dance-at-london-palladium/#comments Thu, 01 Jul 2010 15:45:59 +0000 Hannah Collingbourne http://blog.visitlondon.com/?p=11365

Big Dance, a London-wide celebration of dance, launched today at the London Palladium.

Legally Blonde star Sheridan Smith and Jerry Mitchell, choreographer of Hairspray and Legally Blonde, took to the stage for a special performance of Hairspray number You Can’t Stop The Beat.

An audience of hundreds of school children joined in with the routine from their seats.

Strictly Come Dancing’s Camilla Dallerup also made an appearance, as did the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, who treated us to a Bollywood dance demonstration.

“London is the greatest dance, musical and cultural city on Earth,” said the Mayor. “Get down on it and strut your funky stuff in Big Dance 2010.”

Big Dance runs from 3 to 11 July 2010, with flagship event The Big World Dance on 10 July.

Thursday Theatre News: The Wizard of Oz, Legally Blonde, The Railway Children and Michael Sheen as Hamlet http://blog.visitlondon.com/2010/05/thursday-theatre-news-the-wizard-of-oz-legally-blonde-the-railway-children-and-michael-sheen-as-hamlet/ http://blog.visitlondon.com/2010/05/thursday-theatre-news-the-wizard-of-oz-legally-blonde-the-railway-children-and-michael-sheen-as-hamlet/#comments Thu, 13 May 2010 18:00:22 +0000 Zoe Craig http://blog.visitlondon.com/?p=9209

It’s been a wonderful week for London theatre news.

First, tickets went on sale for Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Wizard of Oz, opening at the London Palladium next year. Have you got yours yet? Book them here!

Then I learnt that Richard Fleeshman is to join Legally Blonde The Musical next month. The former Corrie star (remember Craig Harris?) and winner of ITV’s Soapstar Superstar will replace Duncan James as the sleazy Warner Huntington III, from 16 June.

Also, news about that Railway Children show being staged in Waterloo Station this summer. Caroline Harker and Marshall Lancaster will lead the cast in the London show: Marshall (who you’ll recognise from Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes) reprises the role of Mr Perks after playing the character for York Theatre Royal; and Caroline is going to play Mother.

But I think the most exciting theatre announcement today is that Michael Sheen is going to play Hamlet at the Young Vic next year. Michael Sheen is an amazing actor, who’s played many famous names like Tony Blair, David Frost and Brian Clough on screen. This is sure to be an amazing opportunity to see him on the London stage. And he’ll be directed by Ian Rickson, who was responsible for directing Jez Butterworth’s hit play, Jerusalem. If you’re anything like me, you’ll feel more than a little bit tingly and jittery about this news… Sounds like it’ll be amazing.

Finally, do you often find your enjoyment of the theatre is disturbed by other audience members? Do rustling sweet wrappers, persistent coughs and people who whisper during a performance really put you off? Then the One-On-One Festival at BAC might be a solution to your problems! Running from 6 to 18 July, this is the UK’s first major international festival of what’s described as

“an increasingly popular genre of work that takes place between one artist and one audience member at a time”.

Intimate doesn’t even come close to describing it! Find out more at www.bac.org.uk.

Sister Act The Musical http://blog.visitlondon.com/2009/11/sister-act-the-musical/ http://blog.visitlondon.com/2009/11/sister-act-the-musical/#comments Mon, 16 Nov 2009 16:08:58 +0000 Pauline http://blog.visitlondon.com/?p=3940 Deloris van Cartier / Sister Mary Clarence (Patina Miller) and nuns. Photo by Catherine Ashmore

Seeing Sister Act The Musical with my very own sister was one of the highlights of my month. After the show I was on a high for the next week!

Having watched the 1992 movie starring Whoopi Goldberg, I was looking forward to seeing this comedy-crime-musical brought to the London stage. Sister Act The Musical is produced by Whoopi Goldberg and stars Patina Miller as Deloris.

The story: Deloris Van Carter witnesses her gangster boyfriend committing murder. She then joins the witness protection program and is hidden in a convent. Deloris makes friends with the nuns and soon blows her cover.

The show features a new score by Alan Menken packed with heavenly hits. Each cast member has their moment to shine. The show offers a good range of vocal talents and song types. Chris Jarman plays Deloris’ boyfriend Shank. He has a voice as smooth and deep as Barry White. The musical also includes impressive set pieces with a full nun choir!

As you might expect, I found myself looking to get my sister’s attention when Deloris sang the song Sister Act. In the end I found myself asking the question “Was Patina Miller on a par with Whoopi Goldberg in the lead role? The Answer: “Absolutely”.

I came away feeling that Sister Act The Musical was better than the movie. It’s well worth a trip to the West End.

Sister Act The Musical is booking at the London Palladium until 13 February 2010.

Have you seen a famous movie adapted for the London stage such as Breakfast at Tiffany’s or The Shawshank Redemption. Which was better: the film or the show?
