In an uncharacteristically organised move, 295 students yesterday broke the Guinness World Record for the largest mortarboard toss. Held to highlight the international element of London’s universities, the event at More London by Tower Bridge saw students from all over the world replicate the traditional graduation celebration.

This is the 14th world record to be set in London this year, meaning that the capital is a significant way towards its goal of beating more than 20 world records.

Actress Joanna Lumley joined the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, this morning to launch a new “repair and reuse” scheme for London. The pair posed in front of a sculpture made from old cupboards and chairs.

The London Reuse Network has been set up to address the 65,000 tonnes of household products thrown out by Londoners each year. The charity will collect, refurbish and sell on everything from furniture, books and carpets to bikes, cookers and fridges.

“There’s no shame in recycling things,” said Lumley, who last year donated her sofa to the Big Womble charity auction. ”It’s the most sensible and most rewarding thing you can do.”

They’re all part of the London Elephant Parade 2010.

So far my favourite is the one outside Regis House (opposite Monument Station on the north bank of London Bridge), which is decorated with peacock feathers. There are also silver ones, floral ones and a red bumpy one with tiny elephants inside it (check out the video) dotted around More London.

Here’s a picture of the view from VL Towers last week, as the snow continued to fall into the early evening…

Sure, the snow has caused some problems in the city in the last week. But for every train cancellation and school closure, there’s space for some exciting sledging, brilliant snowball fights, fantastic photo opportunities, and indulging in London’s snug, warm, indoor attractions.

Did the snow give you an excuse to do something different in London last week? Let us know in the comments below!

And if you have any lovely pictures of London in the snow, don’t forget to share them in our flickrpool.
