We know that London’s a 24-hour city, but this fascinating video demonstrates how people travel around the capital day and night.

The map illustrate the journeys made by London’s 3.1 million Oyster card holders during one 24-hour period. It was created using data from 16 million daily Oyster transactions, as well as vehicle-location data from the city’s 8,500 buses.

Roll up, roll up! Transport for London (TfL) has created a fancy souvenir Oyster card to celebrate the Tube's 150th birthday next year.

Roll up, roll up! Transport for London (TfL) has created a fancy souvenir Oyster card to celebrate the Tube’s 150th birthday next year. London made history on 9 January 1863 when the world’s first-ever underground train made the 3.5-mile maiden journey between Paddington and Farringdon on the Metropolitan line, marking the start of a beast of a transport network that now shuttles around a staggering 1,107 million passengers a year.

On sale from 10 December, the limited edition Oyster card features the Tube’s shiny new 150th anniversary logo, set against an attractive background of vintage Underground designs. You can use the cards in the same way as usual, either as pay as you go or by adding your Travelcard to it, and they will be available to buy at London Underground stations and TfL Travel Information Centres. The special Oyster cards come hot on the heels of the success of the cards created for the Royal Wedding and the Diamond Jubilee. Grab one while you can – it might be 150 years before they make another one!

Visitors to London from the UK and overseas can buy visitor Oyster cards in advance, although they may not feature the limited edition design.

It’s been on the London map for 340 years, but the Chelsea Physic Garden still remains a sanctuary from the city that surrounds it.

Founded by the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries to help train apprentices in identifying plants, the garden and its collection of around 5,000 useful, exotic and medicinal plants form one of the world’s oldest botanic gardens.

Expansions and additions from successive head gardeners mirror discoveries in botany and horticultural fashion. Two examples are a fascinating pharmaceutical garden, and the UK’s oldest rockery – compete with giant clam shells brought to London by Captain Cook on HMS Endeavour!

Free guided tours by well-informed volunteers help bring the garden to life for those more interested in the history than the horticulture of the garden. These are usually available two or three times each day (timings vary).

Currently appearing at the garden is “Pertaining to Things Natural“, a series of outdoor sculptures by more than 20 leading artists. Each of these artworks responds in some way to its surroundings, ranging from a beautifully fluid marble screen to a pink metal spiral.

“Pertaining to Things Natural” runs until 31 Oct. The garden is open until 10pm every Wednesday until 5 September. Tickets to the garden are also 2-4-1 until 9 September if you present your Oyster card.
Passengers with Oyster cards can touch in to take a flight for £3.20. Passengers without Oyster or Travelcards pay a slightly higher cash fare of £4.30.
Lots of you love the Tube, double decker buses are really popular, and the DLR and Thames Clippers also get the nod. Black cabs are some people’s favourite form of transport, not least due to the drivers, who you find entertaining and full of local knowledge (as well as “The Knowledge” of course).

But the most popular way to get around London is walking and since we reckon London’s a great city for exploring on foot, we’re really pleased you do too!

Do you agree? Join the chorus by telling us your favourite way to get around London in the comments below.

Do you have a Pay As You Go Oyster card? Do you have to get a separate ticket when you travel on the trains to see friends out in places like Earlsfield?

Does it get a bit annoying?!

We’ve got good news for you! From 2 January, you’ll be able to use your Pay As You Go Oyster on National Rail services within Greater London. If you frequently travel across South and North East London, this is going make a nice difference to your journeys.

So, from 2 January, Oyster Pay As You Go will be accepted on all Greater London services operated by:

Chiltern

National Express East Anglia

London Midland

First Great Western

First Capital Connect

Southern

Southeastern

South West Trains

Oyster Pay As You Go will also be accepted on c2c services in Greater London as well as Grays, Chafford Hundred, Purfleet and Ockendon stations in Essex.

Even better, Oyster Pay As You Go will be accepted on all Thames Clipper River services from today. (We’ve already seen a Thames Clipper with a big Oyster flag making its way under Tower Bridge this morning.) The river is a hugely underused form of transport; hopefully this change in the ticketing will rectify that.

Download the new map showing the “Oysterisation” of London! Oyster Rail Services London January 2010

Does this make a difference to your journeys? Let us know!
