From traditional British gastro pubs, to a cool pizza place and two Korean takeaways, here’s our pick of London’s most exciting new restaurants.

The Truscott Arms

Award-winning theatre producer Andrew Fishwick has launched The Truscott Arms in Maida Vale. The ground-floor pub serves craft beers, artisan wines and affordable bar food, while the first-floor restaurant offers a small and evolving menu of dishes such as braised Gower salt marsh lamb belly with pommes puree and tomato aubergine caviar. There’s also an art gallery where you can see the work of emerging London artists.

Goat

The Goat in Boots gastro pub on Fulham Road has re-launched as Goat following a refurbishment. Now run by the team behind Bumpkin and Boujis, the revamped venue boasts an informal restaurant, a stylish cocktail bar and an all-day lounge. The restaurant serves a New York-Italian menu, featuring pancakes with maple syrup and bacon, wood-fired pizzas, steaks and lobster.

Homeslice

Homeslice pizza, which won a loyal following when it popped up at The Filling Station in King’s Cross, has found a permanent home in Neal’s Yard, Covent Garden. Five varieties of pizza will be served each day, with the menu announced on Twitter at @homesliceLDN. Magnums of house wine will be left on tables for customers to help themselves on a “pay for what you drink” basis. Homeslice opens on 8 April.

Beagle

Also opening on 8 April is Beagle, a new British restaurant set in three renovated railway arches in Geffrye Street, Shoreditch. The homely menu will feature the best of British produce: pig’s head croquette with gribiche (egg sauce), wild sea bass with samphire and cucumber, and custard tart with poached rhubarb. As well as the restaurant, Beagle will have a bar and coffee shop.

Kimchee

Korean restaurant Kimchee is launching two new takeaway outlets – on the Strand on 8 April and New Oxford Street on 29 April. “Kimchee to go” will serve a range of healthy meals including soft rice porridge, mix-your-own bibimbaps (a rice dish), Korean “sushi” kimbap rolls, bento-style dosirak boxes, salads and noodle soups. The original Kimchee was set up to introduce British people to Korean cuisine at a reasonable price.

Look out for more restaurant news soon.

There are plenty of exciting new restaurants and bars opening in London right now. The only problem is deciding which to try first…

Balthazar

One of this year’s most talked-about new openings, Balthazar brings a taste of New York to London’s Covent Garden. The restaurant is closely modelled on the original Balthazar, which opened in downtown New York in 1997. You can enjoy bistro-style food throughout the day: breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner as well as weekend brunch. As in New York, there’s a Balthazar boulangerie next door selling artisan breads.

Radio Bar at ME London

A stunning rooftop bar called Radio will open tomorrow at the trendy new ME London hotel on the Strand. The bar will offer panoramic views of London’s skyline including St Paul’s Cathedral, Tower Bridge, the Houses of Parliament and the river Thames. The hotel already boasts two new restaurants: STK London, an American steakhouse, and Cucina Asellina, an Italian based on the popular Asellina restaurant in New York.

Salvador & Amanda Bloomsbury

Bloomsbury is already home to one of London’s most popular attractions, the British Museum, and now there’s yet another reason to visit the area. Opening tomorrow, Salvador & Amanda Bloomsbury is reminiscent of the cosmopolitan cafés of Madrid, Bilbao and Barcelona. You can snack on tapas, order a proper meal or simply sip cocktails and dance into the early hours.

More New London Restaurants

Other recent new openings include:

Sushinho – This new eatery near Liverpool Street blends Japanese and Brazilian cuisine and features a 10ft sushi bar and a cocktail lounge

Carrara at St James Theatre – The elegant restaurant at the new St James Theatre is already attracting celebrities such as Eddie Izzard, Lenny Henry and Jools Holland

Voltaire – A new haunt for champagne drinkers and cigar smokers in the City

K-10 Broadgate – The Japanese “kaiten” (conveyor belt) restaurant has opened a second branch at Broadgate

From pancakes to Brazilian street food, there’s always something new for foodies to discover in London. Here’s our pick of the best new restaurant openings and events.

Yalla Yalla Pops Up in Shoreditch
Middle Eastern eatery Yalla Yalla has opened a pop-up branch in Shoreditch High Street. Specialising in Lebanese and Middle Eastern street food, the new restaurant will be open for at least six months. The space is covered by a canopy, with heaters and a mixture of cushion seating and tables with stools. On the menu you’ll find mezze, lamb and chicken shawarma and wraps, along with a choice of Lebanese wines and beers.

Pancakes at Shutterbug
If you’re looking for somewhere to celebrate Pancake Day on Tuesday, why not head to new “crepe and cocktail speakeasy” Shutterbug, where they’re combining pancakes with a Mardi Gras party. Parisian chef Romain Ragouin has been making crepes for more than 15 years, and current favourites include chorizo, egg, roasted peppers and fresh chilli; and red velvet crepe with mascarpone and strawberries.

Rio Carnival at Guanabara
The sights, sounds and tastes of Rio Carnival are coming to London’s Guanabara for a six-day Brazilian festival, starting today. Chef Pietro Rocha will be creating delicious carnival favourites, such as corn dogs and feijoada (a black bean, sausage and beef stew) and there’ll be rum cocktails and Brazilian Brahmas beer. Daily entertainment includes samba dancing, live music and DJs.

The Spaniards Inn
The historic Spaniards Inn near Hampstead Heath has reopened following a refurbishment. Built in 1585, The Spaniards was immortalised in Charles Dickens’ The Pickwick Papers and Bram Stoker’s Dracula. The interior, with its oak-panelled walls and chandeliers, has been spruced up and the outside boasts an al fresco bar, barbeque and dog wash. You can choose from a changing menu of classic pub dishes and an extensive selection of beers.

Look out for more restaurant news soon.

Last year saw a host of exciting new restaurant and bar openings in London, from Alan Yau’s Bangkok-style café Naamyaa to Guy Pelly’s Mexican bar Tonteria. 2013 looks set to be just as eventful, starting with the two new openings below.

Cucina Asellina

Newly opened at the ME London hotel on The Strand, Cucina Asellina serves simple, affordable Italian cuisine including pizzas and flatbreads from a wood-burning stove and a range of homemade pasta. The new eatery is inspired by the popular Asellina restaurant in New York, as well as the original Asellina Taverna in Pompeii.

Just Falafel

Just Falafel, a successful fast food chain in the Middle East, has opened its first UK branch in Monmouth Street, Seven Dials. There’s a huge variety of falafel sandwiches on offer: choose from falafels with Indian sauce and cucumber pickles; Italian-style falafels with mozzarella and ciabatta; or a Japanese combo with avocado, ginger and sauce.

In the run-up to the festive season there has been a flurry of new restaurant openings in London.

The Electric Diner

The Electric Diner and Electric Donuts have just opened at the Electric Cinema in Portobello Road. The new venues are a collaboration between Soho House owner Nick Jones and renowned chef Brendan Sodikoff of Au Cheval in Chicago. The Electric Diner’s French-American menu features dishes inspired by Au Cheval such as an award-winning cheeseburger, fried bologna sandwich and a range of egg dishes. Electric Donuts serves fresh donuts and coffee throughout the day.

Bo London

Look out Heston Blumenthal, there’s a new experimental chef in town! Chef-patron Alvin Leung of two-Michelin-starred Bo Innovation in Hong Kong opens his first London restaurant this week in Mayfair. Bo London introduces Leung’s “extreme Chinese cuisine” to the capital, breaking down perceptions of traditional Chinese food with concoctions such as Sex on the Beach, which features an edible condom. All proceeds from the dish go to the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

HKK

Following the launch of Chrysan in Broadgate West earlier this year, the Hakkasan Group has opened another restaurant nearby. HKK offers a 15-course Chinese and Cantonese tasting menu, as well as an eight-course lunch menu and a vegetarian menu. The kitchen is headed up by Michelin-starred chef Tong Chee Hwee, who has worked at Hakkasan for 11 years. Make sure you dress smartly as the staff certainly will: their uniforms are designed by up-and-coming fashion designer Tim Soar.

More New Restaurants and Foodie Events

Wabi – New Japanese restaurant in Kingsway from former Nobu head chef Scott Hallsworth

Flat Iron – The pop-up steakhouse has found a permanent home in Soho serving reasonably priced steaks and cocktails

Del Mercato – New Italian restaurant, bakery and bar near Borough Market and Vinopolis

Some of London’s top restaurateurs are opening new eateries this month, from Alan Yau’s Bangkok-style café Naamyaa to Bodo’s Schloss, an Alpine-themed venue from the founders of Mahiki.

Naamyaa

Alan Yau, the man behind Wagamama, Hakkasan and Yauatcha, launches a new restaurant in Islington next week. Naamyaa will serve classic Siam dishes, Bangkok street food and Western café staples. The restaurant is named after a sauce cooked in traditional terracotta pots and served with kanom jin (fresh rice noodles), a dish that will be a core offering on the menu.

Coya

Peruvian restaurant Coya has just opened in Mayfair, serving ceviche (a traditional dish made from marinated raw fish) and Pisco Sours alongside a range of other Peruvian dishes. The “sumptuously distressed” interior is decked out with antique Peruvian furniture, while live bands and DJs add to the atmosphere. Coya is the latest venture from Arjun Waney, the restaurateur behind Zuma, La Petite Maison and The Arts Club.

Bodo’s Schloss

Bodo’s Schloss is a new bar, restaurant and disco from the founders of Mahiki. The Kensington venue is designed to look like a lodge in the Austrian Alps, with snow-covered pine trees at the entrance. Drinks include Austrian wines and beers, homemade schnapps, champagne served in milk urns and shots served on antique skis. The signature cocktail comes in a carved ice castle.

Looking for somewhere new to take the kids? Harrods has just opened a Disney Café, the first Disney restaurant outside its theme parks. On the menu you’ll find Mickey-shaped toasted sandwiches along with ravioli, soups and salads, a range of hot dishes, and desserts including a family-sized knickerbocker glory. The fun interior features a Big Ben that chimes twice an hour, sculptures of Disney characters and screens showing Disney films.

New restaurant and bar openings continue apace in London. Here’s a round-up of the latest London restaurant news.

Buddha-Bar

Pan-Asian restaurant Buddha-Bar opens today in Knightsbridge, serving a blend of Chinese, Japanese and Thai food and a choice of “avant-garde” cocktails. Diners are overlooked by a giant Buddha designed by sculptor David Begbie, while DJs provide a mix of electro and tribal sounds. You can enjoy 25% off food plus a free cocktail until 30 October.

Reverend JW Simpson

The team behind quirky cocktail bar Bourne & Hollingsworth have launched a new venue, Reverend JW Simpson, in Goodge Street. During building work the designers discovered an old apartment and decided to keep as many of the original features as possible, including the flooring, wallpaper, chipped paint and mementos of the former occupant – Reverend JW Simpson.

Tonteria

Mahiki founder and friend of the royals Guy Pelly has opened a new venture in Sloane Square with partner Marc Burton. Tonteria resembles a Mexican bar, with distressed décor, Mexican plants and hammocks. There’s a Mexican-inspired menu, sharing cocktails served in skull-shaped vessels, and a shot train that delivers tequila shots to tables.

Rekorderlig Winter Forest Bar

East London’s Old Truman Brewery will be transformed into the Rekorderlig Winter Forest Bar from this evening. Open until 6 November, the pop-up bar will offer Swedish cider and food pairings in Scandinavian surroundings. Tickets cost £5 and include a selection of Rekorderlig flavour tasters and a complimentary dish.

London’s restaurant scene is constantly evolving and the past fortnight has seen a host of exciting new restaurant openings across the capital.

Dishoom Shoreditch
The team behind Dishoom, the Bombay-style café in Covent Garden, has opened a second branch in Shoreditch. Like the original restaurant, Dishoom Shoreditch has a beautifully dishevelled interior, which pays homage to the Irani cafés that were once common in Bombay.

On the menu you’ll find lamb raan (the house special), chicken and pomegranate salad, masala prawns, and chole-chawal (a big bowl of spiced chickpeas with homemade sauce and fragrant steamed rice).

Dishoom Shoreditch is currently in a “soft opening” phase in the run-up to the official launch on 19 October, and is offering a 50 per cent discount.

Beard to Tail
Quirky cocktail bar Callooh Callay now has a sister restaurant, Beard to Tail. As you might guess from the name, the eatery serves a carnivorous menu of dishes made from all parts of the animal.

Head chef Dan Thrippleton buys whole carcasses and butchers the meat in-house, making sure that nothing is wasted. Meat lovers can try bearded pig cheeks with ginger and dill pickle or the signature Rumpie Pumpie Suffolk pork rump for two to share.

There’s also a deli counter where you can get tea, coffee and light bites, and a bar serving craft beers and whiskey and bourbon-based cocktails.

Colbert
Rex Restaurant Associates, owners of The Wolseley and The Delaunay, have opened a new restaurant on Sloane Square. Inspired by French pavement cafés, Colbert is an informal eatery serving classic Parisian food.

The menu includes moules marniniere, steak Diane and a large selection of eggs (from omelettes to Florentine) and croques (including monsieur, madame and more unusual varieties such as croque New York).

For those with a sweet tooth, there are breakfast patisseries, tartes, biscuits and ice cream. The wine list is exclusively French, with many wines available by the glass.

Bonnie Gull Seafood Shack
Billed as “a seaside restaurant in the city”, Bonnie Gull Seafood Shack has just opened in the West End following the success of a pop-up seafood shack in Hackney last year.

The menu focuses on simple dishes that make the most of the day’s catch, such as Isle of Lewis mussels with Aspell cider and Cumbrian bacon, and west coast Scottish lobster with shoestring fries and garlic butter. Food is available to take away at lunchtime.

Even the cocktails have a seaside theme. Try the Bonnie Mary - vodka with clamato (made from tomato juice and clam broth), sea-inspired spices and a choice of fresh oyster or grilled prawn garnish.

More New London Restaurants and Bars
Other recent openings include:

Edwin’s French wine bar and restaurant in Shoreditch

Chooks chicken restaurant in Muswell Hill

1776, an elegant dining room at 1 Lombard Street, where you order cocktails using an iPad

Bounce, which combines cocktails, high-end dining and table tennis

Be At One Guildhall, where you can enjoy cocktails and food in the heart of the City

This autumn has already seen a host of exciting new restaurant openings in London.

New D&D Restaurants at The Old Bengal Warehouse

D&D London has launched four new eating and drinking venues at The Old Bengal Warehouse: Fish Market, serving fish and shellfish sourced from the British Isles; New Street Grill, a modern British meat restaurant and grill; The Old Bengal Bar, where you can enjoy classic cocktails; and New Street Wine Shop, which stocks quality, rare and fine wines and serves a menu of light bites.

The Old Bengal Warehouse was built between 1768 and 1771 to store spices, tea, cigars and port. The building featured in a poem by John Masefield, who described it as holding “the wealth of the world and London’s power”.

Chrysan from the Hakkasan Group

The Hakkasan Group has teamed up with top Japanese chef Yoshihiro Murata to launch Chrysan, a pioneering Japanese restaurant near Liverpool Street, which sources local ingredients rather than importing from Japan.

The menu balances tradition and innovation, featuring à la carte dishes as well as a signature kaiseki (similar to haute cuisine) menu for dinner and bento set lunches. There’s also a cocktail bar, NeNe, which offers a unique cocktail list and a menu of lighter dishes.
