If you’re out and about this weekend, there’s a rugby showdown, a floating market with a Swedish twist, a design extravaganza and even jousting to choose from – all without straying beyond the M25.

Saracens v Tigers at Wembley
Two of the country’s top rugby teams will challenge each other this Saturday as the centrepiece of a whole day of entertainment at Wembley Stadium. (Saracens are from London, if you’re not sure who to cheer for.) The big game begins at 3.30pm, but warm up gig from is Bajan chart act Cover Drive, who opened for Rihanna on her Loud tour last year. Tickets are still available, with adult prices from £16. 15 Sept

Lambeth Country Show
Forget the big smoke and escape to Brockwell Park this weekend, as the Lambeth Country Show brings the spirit of a country fair to South London. We’re talking sheep dog displays, flower and vegetable competitions and more animals than ever before in the farm zone. There’s also live music on two stages and other rural pursuits like, er, horse jousting – though we’re not sure they really do that in the countryside! 15-16 Sep

IKEA Floating Night Market
IKEA wasn’t content with a catalogue to introduce its latest collection. It has set up a floating night market on Regent’s Canal this Friday evening, with market boats packed with its new wares including textiles inspired by graphic patterns and global influences. Reserve your free slot here for a trip that promises to be no longer than an hour. 14 Sep

New Artist Fair
Art can be expensive – for the artists as well as the public. The emerging talents at the New Artist Fair sell their work directly to guests, without any gallery fees. And if you feel like buying, the pieces range from a respectable £50 to £2,000. Around 45 artists have work on display, ranging from painting and drawing to printmaking, photography, sculpture and installations. It’s in the Old Truman Brewery, a distinctly cool building that is part of Brick Lane’s heritage and worth seeing for itself. 14-16 Sep

London Design Festival
Some 300 events on the programme means this festival of London’s design prowess could get a little daunting. Try narrowing your interests – are you more tempted by fabrics or furniture? Glass or graphic design? Or you could stick to one area – this map shows the location of the talks, exhibitions, installations and events taking place. A top spot will be the Victoria and Albert Museum, where a beam of light will follow you in the entrance tunnel while in the ceramics galleries you can climb previously closed staircases to see Keiichi Matsuda’s Prism installation in the dome. Until 23 Sep

Rugby sevens has just become an Olympic sport and will make its debut at the 2016 Games. But you don’t have to wait until then to see a match.

Emirates Airline London Sevens comes to Twickenham Stadium later this month, complete with fast-paced rugby and fancy dress.

We caught up with England captain and all-time top point-scorer Ben Gollings to find out more.

Tell us about the rugby sevens game

It encompasses a bit of a festival-type atmosphere. From the crowd’s perspective, you get people coming out in their fancy dress. This year it’s a beach party theme. They come out going crazy!

It’s fast, furious, fun rugby; a short, sharp game with lots happening. There’s a lot of hard work going into it. It’s played on the same sized field as a proper rugby pitch. It’s 14 minutes per game but there’s a lot happening in those 14 minutes. That’s all you want to play, trust me!

It’s a really good day out, a great spectacle, even if you’re not the biggest rugby fan.

What’s it like playing at Twickenham?

Twickenham is always brilliant. It’s the home of rugby and an incredible stadium. It’s always great to be able to run out in an England shirt in front of a home crowd.

How do you prepare for a match?

We have a little routine where about 45 minutes before a game we start to get ready. We then move from the changing room to the warm-up area for a 10 or 15 minute warm-up. Then it’s shirts on and out you go.

How will you celebrate if you win?

The nature of the game is that you’re usually absolutely exhausted by the time you finish. And the following weekend we have a big tour.

The boys might have a quiet drink but really it’s recuperation and rest. It will be awesome if we do win here!

How do you spend your free time in London?

As a team we try and do different things. Last year we did a bike sightseeing tour around London. I saw sights I’d never seen before and it was great fun.

You might see us kayaking down the Thames near where we stay. We like to do something different, away from rugby.

London adds a new landmark sporting competition to its calendar today, with the announcement that the 2015 Rugby World Cup will be played in England.

Non-fans of the funny shaped ball may be surprised to learn the Rugby World Cup is the world’s third biggest sporting event. (Only the Olympics and FIFA World Cup beat it!)

The 2015 World Cup will run from 4 September to 17 October, and the final will be played at Twickenham.

Other London venues taking part include Wembley and the Emirates Stadium.

During the tournament, matches will be played in 10 cities at 12 grounds across the country, including Old Trafford in Manchester; Anfield in Liverpool; and Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium, the only non-English venue.

The Rugby Football Union beat competitive bids from South Africa and Italy to win the tournament.

Mayor of London, Boris Johnson is thrilled that England won the bid: “Rugby has a passionate and loyal following in England.

“With the Women’s Rugby World Cup in 2010, the men’s tournament in 2015 is another feather in the cap for the sport and adds to London’s outstanding calendar of international sporting events – from the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games to the ICC Twenty20 World Cup, and the NFL at Wembley to the Tour de France Grand Depart.

“London has some of the finest sporting venues in the world – Twickenham, of course, as well as Wembley and the Emirates Stadium. But from 2012 there will be another, excellent new venue, the Olympic Stadium. We will discuss … it providing another base with the RFU and work with them to ensure the 2015 Rugby World Cup is the best ever tournament.

“And it goes without saying that rugby fans heading to the capital from across the world in 2015 will also enjoy a hearty welcome, as well as an unbeatable range of other activities and attractions.”
