I went along to the East Wintergarden in Canary Wharf this lunchtime to see David Beckham unveil his nomination for an Olympic Torchbearer.

Gabriella Roseje is from Bermondsey in London, and has played sport all her life; more recently she’s started coaching others. She works with people from disadvantaged backgrounds to help them get into sport.

Beckham said, “Gabriella is an impressive and inspiring person. Not only is she successful in her own right, she willingly supports and helps those around her. I’m proud to nominate her as Samsung’s first Olympic Torchbearer. The nomination campaign aims to give the unsung heroes in communities across the world their chance to shine in the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay. Gabriella is a perfect example of the kind of qualities we are looking for in a person to run with the Olympic Flame.”

Just 18 years old, it was clear Gabriella was both excited and overwhelmed at being nominated as this slightly fuzzy video shows:

Gabriella’s nomination means she’ll be one of the Samsung Torch Relay runners: the company is looking to recruit 1,359 more inspirational people to be part of the total 8,000 relay runners. If you want to nominate someone, or just find out more, visit www.samsung.com/uk/london2012

Giant Olympic Rings unveiled at St Pancras International http://blog.visitlondon.com/2011/03/giant-olympic-rings-unveiled-at-st-pancras-international/ http://blog.visitlondon.com/2011/03/giant-olympic-rings-unveiled-at-st-pancras-international/#comments Mon, 07 Mar 2011 13:00:55 +0000 Zoe Craig http://blog.visitlondon.com/?p=20059

Boris Johnson and Seb Coe revealed the giant Olympic rings at London’s St Pancras Station last week.

This video really captures the excitement at the event: the music performances, parkour demonstrations, and the work that went into hanging the rings in place.

Have you seen the rings at St Pancras? What do you think of them?

London 2012 Olympic Games Timetable Released http://blog.visitlondon.com/2011/02/london-2012-olympic-games-timetable-released/ http://blog.visitlondon.com/2011/02/london-2012-olympic-games-timetable-released/#comments Tue, 15 Feb 2011 09:00:28 +0000 Zoe Craig http://blog.visitlondon.com/?p=19352

The schedule for the London 2012 Olympic Games has been released, just one month before tickets go on sale.

The first action of the Games will take place outside London, and before the Opening Ceremony: the women’s football in Cardiff, Glasgow and Coventry on 25 July.

Britain’s first gold medal could go to Mark Cavendish in the men’s cycling road race on the day after the Opening Ceremony, 28 July.

The middle weekend looks like being the most popluar. With possible appearances from Jessica Ennis, Christine Ohuruogu, Paula Radcliffe and Usain Bolt over the 4 and 5 of August, demand for tickets is likely to be high.

Saturday 4 August is being called “Super Saturday” with the results of the heptathlon competition and the women’s 100m final taking prime-time slots. The Olympic rowing and swimming competitions will also reach their climaxes.

The dates, times, venues and prices for more than 600 competition sessions across all 26 Olympic sports are being emailed to the 2.2m people who have signed up for info ahead of tickets going on sale on 15 March.

London 2012 chairman and Double Olympic champion Sebastian Coe described them as the “greatest tickets on earth for the greatest show on earth”.

“We are now getting to the business end of the project and we know from the number of people who have signed up for ticket information that there is a real hunger from all parts of the country to be there.”

Visit www.tickets.london2012.com/about_tickets.html#prices to download the full timetable for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

And don’t forget, tickets go on sale on 15 March!

There will be 6.6 million Olympic tickets made available to the general public. Two million people have already signed up to the 2012 ticketing database. If you’re not one of them, make sure you sign up now.

London 2012 Chairman Sebastian Coe said:

London 2012: Velodrome Roof Installed http://blog.visitlondon.com/2010/07/london-2012-velodrome-roof-installed/ http://blog.visitlondon.com/2010/07/london-2012-velodrome-roof-installed/#comments Fri, 02 Jul 2010 10:00:03 +0000 Jonny Payne http://blog.visitlondon.com/?p=11410

London 2012‘s Velodrome is on course to be the first completed stadium in the Olympic Park after its roof was guided into place this week.

The Pringle-shaped roof, made from more than 1,000 timber panels, has now been weather-proofed allowing work on the inside of the arena to gather pace.

The venue, which will host the cycling events at the London 2012 Games, is expected to be completed early next year.

Sebastian Coe, the London 2012 chairman, told the Press Association: “We hope that the Velodrome’s striking design will be host to some outstanding British cycling performances, as well as leaving a first rate sporting legacy after the Games.”

We think it looks great, what do you think?

Sainsbury’s has been announced as the first-ever Paralympic-only sponsor for the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The Sainsbury’s pledge represents the largest sponsorship of any Paralympic Games to date.

Townend: London 2012 Equestrian Events at Greenwich Park Will Be “Fantastic” http://blog.visitlondon.com/2010/04/townend-london-2012-equestrian-events-at-greenwich-park-will-be-fantastic/ http://blog.visitlondon.com/2010/04/townend-london-2012-equestrian-events-at-greenwich-park-will-be-fantastic/#comments Wed, 21 Apr 2010 11:06:52 +0000 Zoe Craig http://blog.visitlondon.com/?p=8436

Oliver Townend is Britain’s leading three-day-eventer. And this week, he’s spoken out in favour of the decision to have the London 2012 Olympic equestrian events in Greenwich Park.

Talking to insidethegames.biz, Oliver says, “Having London 2012 coming up is a huge bonus for our sport.

“I know there’s been a lot of controversy about holding the equestrian events in Greenwich Park, but I think it’s going to be fantastic for local people. They will be able to step outside their front door and watch a really great event. It’s a big opportunity for us to explain what we do to a new audience. I can’t think of a more exciting sport to be watching on a nice sunny day, whether you are interested in horses or not.

I am really looking forward to London 2012.”

Both the equestrian and the modern pentathlon events will be held at Greenwich Park in London 2012, following a decision made in March by Greenwich Council’s Planning Board. The planning permission was granted to London 2012 along with 42 separate conditions, all of which must be met.

Seb Coe, chairman of London 2012, has made five pledges regarding Greenwich Park:

  1. to protect the park
  2. to ensure as much of the park stays open for as long as possible
  3. to leave a legacy for future generations
  4. to showcase Greenwich to the world
  5. to listen to local people about potential 2012 issues

1,000 Days To Go Until the London Paralympic Games http://blog.visitlondon.com/2009/12/1000-days-to-go-until-the-london-paralympic-games/ http://blog.visitlondon.com/2009/12/1000-days-to-go-until-the-london-paralympic-games/#comments Thu, 03 Dec 2009 10:06:25 +0000 Zoe Craig http://blog.visitlondon.com/?p=4516 Each Paralympic sport and discipline has a pictogram, launched today. This one's track cycling

Hold on to your 2012 hats, people: today marks just 1,000 days to go to the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

If we fast-forward to 29 August 2012, the world’s best Paralympians will be in town, competing across 20 sports and disciplines. It doesn’t seem that far away!

Sebastian Coe, Chair of the London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG), says, “In 1,000 days’ time, we’ll be welcoming the Paralympic Games home and we will deliver a spectacular showcase for Paralympic sport.

“This is a golden opportunity to raise awareness of Paralympic sport, challenge stereotypes about disability and secure a legacy which will have every disabled child getting greater access to sport.”

Colin Chaytors, the chief executive of the English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS), points out that in Britain, we have many talented althetes with disabilities: “Behind those athletes are coaches, volunteers and other developmental support who share the same passion as us to continue the good work.

“EFDS are dedicated to working with all parties over the next two years to ensure we not only make the 2012 Paralympics a success for Britain, but create a long lasting legacy for all disabled people in sport.”

We love the fact that there’s lots of concentration on the legacy aspect of the Paralympics today.

But we’re also enthused by a second string to today’s announcement. Coe says, “As the clock counts down to 2012, there is still time to get involved in the Paralympic Games, and still time to become part of the British team.”

Yes, if you’ve got an impairment and think you’ve got what it takes to compete in 2012, today’s the day to get in touch!

It can take athletes up to eight years to reach an Olympics, but today we’ve learnt Paralympic hopefuls can be ready to compete at an elite level much sooner. Read more about the Talent 2012 programme here.
