London Exhibitions: Last Chance to See

Every September, the current crop of London exhibitions close to make way for exciting new shows. That means it’s your last chance to see some of the summer’s hottest exhibitions…

Jean Nouvel’s Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2010 Launch

Jean Nouvel, the acclaimed French architect responsible for extraordinary buildings from Barcelona to Berlin has completed his first building in London and it’s an outstanding example of modern architecture.

The eccentric architect has created this year’s Serpentine Gallery Pavilion, with a stunning, entirely red creation.

Made from red steel, glass, mirrors and fabric, the main structure includes a 12m high angled wall leaning inwards, dominating the rest of the construction.

In its shadow, under a tiered canopy is a bar and seating area with chess boards, benches and tables. It provides the perfect space to sit back and relax while gazing at reflections from the surrounding red glass.

Outside of the main structure, there’s a chance to work up a sweat playing table tennis or relax on one of the free-standing hammocks or loungers – all in the beautiful surrounds of the luscious Hyde Park.

Jean Nouvel’s Serpentine Gallery Pavilion is the 10th annual commission by the Serpentine Gallery. The pavilion is open to the public from 10 July-17 October. Free admission.

Wolfgang Tillmans at the Serpentine Gallery

Wolfgang Tillmans, the 2000 Turner Prize winner, has been a leading light in abstract photography and photo manipulation and this show is a stunning sample of his work.

The Lighter Series, in which Tillmans challenges the idea of photography as simply a two-dimensional medium, is a stunning collection of bold coloured prints with creases and crinkles transforming them into sculptural items.

Some of Tillmans’ other celebrated work is on display here, such as the simple Paper Drop, a photo of a curled image forming a tear-drop.

Among his new work is Space, Food, Religion, busy montages of images, pamphlets and journalism.

One focuses on consumerism with a photograph of graffiti stating “OBEY CONSUME DIE / THAT’S RIGHT FOLKS”. Another challenges the issues of paedophilia in the Catholic Church, the repression of homosexuality and genital mutilation.

It’s clear that Tillmans’ work continues to push boundaries in new and innovative ways.

It’s his first major exhibition in London since 2003, so don’t miss out!

Jean Nouvel to Design 10th Serpentine Gallery Pavilion

French architect Jean Nouvel will design the 10th Serpentine Gallery Pavilion, it was announced yesterday.

Each year, a different architect is commissioned to produce the temporary structure  in Kensington Gardens. Nouvel has designed more than 200 buildings across the world, but as the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion brief requires, this will be his first in the UK.

The Pavilion will host French artist Christian Boltanski’s Heartbeat installation, where visitors are asked to make a recording of their heartbeat, to be added to an archive and stored on the uninhabited island of Ejima, Japan.

There’s also a Park Nights programme of public events and talks, and The Marathon of Maps for the 21 Century, where artists, writers, thinkers and scientists will present maps expressing their experience of the world.

The Serpentine Gallery Pavilion is open from 5 July to 20 October 2010. Entry to exhibitions is free, but there’s a charge for some special events.
