When it comes to presents and luxury experiences, there are far more options out there for the ladies. Here, we’re tipping the scales in favour of boys. They deserve fun too – and some of these experiences could make a great last-minute Christmas treat.

Gentleman’s Afternoon Tea

Tiny scones and cucumber sandwiches are delicious. But if you want something equally miniature but more macho, establishments like Chapters brasserie in Blackheath have come up with a hearty alternative to the traditional afternoon tea. They have replaced the cakes and tea with Greenwich Meantime beer, salt beef on toasted rye bread, mini-burgers and champagne-glazed oysters. More meat-focused, but no less indulgent. The tea isn’t available in December but will be back in January.

Men-only Spa Day

We all like a bit of self-maintenance, and Nickel Spa in Westminster caters only to men. Gents can choose a male or female therapist for treatments including massage, body treatments, facials and microdermabrasion. If you’re a first-timer to a spa and aren’t quite sure how to act, they offer a handy etiquette guide.

The Perfect Steak

London is blessed with many excellent steak restaurants. Hawksmoor and Gaucho are solid choices, but the newly-opened MASH would be my top pick (the name stands for modern American steak house). MASH has an elegant art deco interior, fantastic wine list and an owner who can advise on your carnivorous choices if you need some help.

Go Karting

Adventurous types will love zooming round the track at one of Team Sport’s two London go karting tracks. Each centre at Tower Bridge and Enfield boasts a 400m track and karts that can reach 40mph. At the end of a session, drivers are given a full race report detailing track times and where they ranked against other competitors.

A Trip to the Barber

There’s something wonderfully nostalgic about an old-fashioned barber’s shop. Murdock has branches in Shoreditch, Soho, Covent Garden, Spitalfields and Mayfair, and you can come away with some beautiful shaving accessories that could make stylish presents.

The famous Rib Room at the Jumeirah Carlton Tower Hotel is celebrating its 50th year, having built up a reputation as one of the top restaurants to enjoy a steak in London.

I recently had dinner at the iconic and newly refurbished restaurant.

We began our evening with indulgent champagne cocktails. We were then seated at a table in one of the restaurant’s three private dining areas, surrounded by art by Feliks Topolski.

The British menu offered all kinds of steak as well as other dishes such as whole roast Suffolk partridge and black truffle roasted Cotswold whole chicken. I had the Orkney scallops accompanied by butternut squash and apple-glazed bacon for starters, which made a delicious combination.

I also had the famous roast rib of Casterbridge Aberdeen angus which was cooked to perfection.

Our waitress was attentive and experienced, helping us to select wine to complement the dishes we had ordered.

I highly recommend The Rib Room for an elegant evening with delicious food and wine. If you end up too full to move then why not book yourself in to one of the hotel’s suites for the night!

Last night I attended the launch party for new restaurant JW Steakhouse at Grosvenor House hotel in Mayfair. As lucky guests we were able to sample much of the menu in canapé form, or by helping ourselves to platefuls of food canteen style!

The American steakhouse’s menu is centred (unsurprisingly) around beef. But not just any beef, this is USDA prime corn-fed Kansas beef and select cuts of Aberdeen Angus. The signature steak is “The Tomahawk”, a 32 ounce, on-the-bone rib eye.

I tasted the Aberdeen Angus, cooked rare, and, although I often get overenthusiastic about steaks and declare they’re the best I’ve ever eaten, this one really is up there.

It’s hard to describe everything else without drooling uncontrollably but I’ll try! Delicious rich crab cakes, salty rock oysters, mini burgers and mustardy steak tartar.

There’s not much choice for vegetarians on the menu apart from salads (again, not surprising at a steak house) but personally, I wouldn’t have minded eating a whole plate of side dishes as they were so good; bourbon sweet potato mash with marshmallow crust, buttery mash, green beans and sautéed wild mushrooms.

And then to desserts, I tried whoopee pie with Bailey’s milk shake – a bit like the adult equivalent of Oreo cookies and milk. Whoopie pies look like a macaroon but are made of two pieces of round chocolate sponge with frosting in between. They were sweet and yummy and the Bailey’s milkshake took the edge off the richness.

Other desserts I saw but was too full to try included a JW cheesecake and carrot cake. They were being snapped up off the plates though so I’m sure they were just as tasty.

JW Steakhouse is open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch
