Visit London Asks: What Are You Doing for Fairtrade Fortnight? http://blog.visitlondon.com/2010/02/visit-london-asks-what-are-you-doing-for-fairtrade-fortnight/ http://blog.visitlondon.com/2010/02/visit-london-asks-what-are-you-doing-for-fairtrade-fortnight/#comments Mon, 22 Feb 2010 10:00:02 +0000 http://blog.visitlondon.com/?p=6642 London’s looking to promote fairtrade in many different ways over the next 14 days: it’s Fairtrade Fortnight 2010 from today until 7 March.

For the next two weeks, you’re being encouraged to swap your normal purchases for fairtrade stuff. So, make your morning coffee a fairtrade coffee, your usual bananas become fairtrade bananas, and your normal cotton T-shirts for fairtrade cotton T-shirts.

Every little change you make helps producers in the developing world get a better deal.

Across London, there are tea parties, coffee mornings, wine tastings, discussions, sports days, film screenings, treasure hunts, craft workshops, a tea dancea barn dance and even a Burlesque PanTease taking place over next fortnight to raise awareness of fairtrade.

Check out the definitive list on www.fairtradelondon.org.uk/events to find out more.

And don’t forget to let us know in the comments below if you’re planning on swapping your shopping for the fairtrade choice! (And register it here too: www.fairtrade.org.uk/thebigswap.)

Vintage Tea Party on the Piazza at Covent Garden http://blog.visitlondon.com/2009/06/vintage-tea-party-on-the-piazza-at-covent-garden/ http://blog.visitlondon.com/2009/06/vintage-tea-party-on-the-piazza-at-covent-garden/#comments Fri, 26 Jun 2009 13:35:47 +0000 http://blog.visitlondon.com/?p=438 Vintage Tea Party in Covent Garden

Floral frocks, feathers and fun were out in force for last night’s vintage-themed tea party, held in Covent Garden on the Piazza. A warm summer evening was the ideal backdrop for this event.

Visitors to the picket-fenced enclosure sat at delicate doily-covered tables for tea (or prosecco cocktails, served fetchingly in vintage teacups) and cake. The whole setup evoked the charm of a bygone era with retro-styled waitresses, old-fashioned crockery, traditional Victoria Sponge and a selection of delicious cupcakes, provided by Vintage Patisserie.

There was even a gypsy fortune teller who inspected my prosecco dregs and predicted I’d have a series of small windfalls in the coming months. As the the sun sank to the strains of 1920s music, I pondered my rosy future while other party-goers stood up for a brief tea dance.

This was Covent Garden’s first vintage “Tea Party on the Piazza” but I certainly hope it won’t be the last. Tea, cake, prosecco and dress-ups? How very civilised.

What’s your favourite spot in London to step back in time?
